Too long to get to post screen?

Hello,
My computer (ami bios)
takes almost 20 seconds to go through the post screen! Excuse me if this is normal i just dont remember it taking so long. With only 2 hdds and 1 dvd-rom i dont see how it takes that long, espically since i remember it taking less than 5 seconds before. I have a video of it just the forums dont support the file type, if its really needed ill see if i can convert it.
Thanks

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

This is actually something you can change in the bios. Go to the bios and look around and just shorten the time.

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

I once came across this problem with an external HDD. My machine would scan the entire 500Gb and test it during post, which could sometimes take up to 2 minutes!!

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

Should say
"enable quick start-up" or something along those lines (as mlabre said). It skips certain tests during POST and most BIOS have it, just a case of finding it. I think mine is under the "Boot" tab.

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

Err nothing i looked and theres nothing like that. It takes a while for the screen to even appear. it will be black for about 10 seconds then it will do all the reading and scanning for like 7 seconds. Anyone else?

Have you updated the BIOS at any point?
What brand of RAM is in there?

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

How did you manage to pair two different sticks of RAM? I always assumed that two identical units were required...
When it was only taking about 5 seconds to get through these checks, was that back when it was new?
All I can suggest is that it is accumulated data that slows the process. Do you have any antivirus that pre-boot scans?

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

Well i have two sticks of one brand and another two of another brand. The brands are both paired together. I have avast anti-virus and yes the first time you install it does a pre-boot scan but i always skip it. I never had it new i got it used so i cant tell you that. Just during varied upgrades it seems to have slowed down gradually over time somewhat to now.

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

Yeah I think thats just the amount of data you have. IDE or SATA hard disks? If your motherboard supports it, you could upgrade. SATA transfers at 1.5 or 3Gbps. Much faster than IDE. This slowness could disappear altogether. From pressing the on button to desktop finished loading, mine takes 41 seconds. Thats with a 320Gb and a 500Gb drive, and after going through the GRUB bootloader to select between Windows and Linux.

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

Yeah im running sata 3gb/s in my soecs to the right. Is there a different cable for each? Or can they be used to transfer data only at one speed?

Re: Too long to get to post screen?

Its hardware dependant. If your hardware supports it thats what speed it will run at. Cables are all the same. I'll keep looking for ways to shorten your boot time (if there are any). Keep subscribed to this thread and I'll get back to you.
