Building a lap console

Is it possible to use a laptop shell (lcd and keyboard only, minus the motherboard, ram, processor, and drives) to connect to a pc tower or mini pc?

What I want to have is a keyboard and monitor interface that can sit in my lap in a recliner or on a couch that can be connected to a pc unit on the floor to have the upgrade flexibility of graphics cards, processors etc. I find that as newer games and programs are released, suddenly my laptop graphics card cant handle it and the laptop is not upgradeable. So to stay up with the times while not having to upgrade whole (expensive) laptops, it would be nice to be connected to a tower hiding out of sight that can be upgraded when needed.

I have seen console units that are designed for server racks that would fill this need (minus the 1u cage mount mechanism) but they themselves are $1k at the low end. So as I have several old laptops not in use anymore, it would be great if I could strip one down and modify to run cables to a pc unit.

Thanks for your advice
