Re: need some input on a build
Your motherboard has a good price, but it only has a PCI Express x16. Newer video cards get much more out of a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot. Your first mobo choice will bottleneck the awesomeness of the Radeon 4850 and future cards.
A better choice for only $15 more, same CPU socket. The Radeon 4850 is awesome, but Palit makes a better video card. Only $5 more For RAM, Kingston or Crucial are pretty much the best. Lifetime warrenties means you're not screwed if they go bad after 30 days. Recommended Save $10 if don't want a fan, but only do that if you plan to get a cooling system for your whole case. You chose a good power supply, processor, case, hard drive, and monitor. I don't believe you'll be disappointed by any of those. EDIT: Sorry, I forgot you were asking about the OS. Some newer games will require Windows Vista, plus you need a 64-bit operating system to utilize more than 3.3GB of RAM. With Vista you can max out your RAM (8GB on this board) and play any game. I recommend you get yourself ready to Crossfire the 4850 sometime in the future if want to play games like Crysis. A mobo that will do it for ya well It's more expensive but it gives you better options. Last edited by toothman : 07-20-2008 at 02:35 PM. |

Re: need some input on a build
Yea, the RAM you posted is 1066.
The mobo I posted says it takes 1200 RAM, but I'm pretty darn sure 1066 will run just fine on it, even for startup (may someone correct me if you know I'm wrong)... besides, the 1200 is more expensive (and doesn't even come in 2gb sticks!!!). If you want to get the cheaper RAM, you can go for it, and that memory will probably work just fine for you (nice price btw), but Kingston and Crucial offer lifetime warrenties and as such are far more motivated than other manufacturers to not ship out potential DOAs. Motherboard Options OMGmissinglink's mobo post has only one problem... it has only 1 PCIe 16x 2.0 slot (the only other PCIe slot is a 1.0 that runs in 4x... not good for CrossFire). If you're going to CrossFire, which may be a good option for you in the future since you have a specific budget for what you're going to spend today, you will need two solid PCIe 16x 2.0 slots, which is what the $150 mobo has. If you don't want to invest in the option to CrossFire, just get the $95 one and upgrade to a better single card later. Or just getting the Radeon 4870 instead of the 4850. Honestly, with the cheaper motherboard, I'd say your money is better spent on the 4870. But if you must not stray from your budget even $100, get the $150 mobo and the 4850 with plans to CrossFire in the future. By itself, the 4850 will provide strong performance with all the current games, as well as Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 (if you're looking forward to those as much as I am). But for first-person-shooter games coming out in the future, you'll need to upgrade past the lone 4850 to get it to play at your desired levels. Crysis may seem like a lame gimmick to get people to buy more, expensive hardware, but games even one year from now won't be much less demanding on average than Crysis. you posted along with the 4850 as for the ram i meant the ddr2 1000 this ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231145 if this will not run on the mobo you posted then i geuss i'll have to up the ram to these. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166 not trying to build the most amazing system in the world right away, just trying to get off my 5700 ultra and my single core 2.2gh proc XD sucks having this lemited of a budget too also thank you much for the inpput so far would love to hear more Last edited by ripe : 07-21-2008 at 09:08 PM. |

Re: need some input on a build
Update: If you really want to be set for the future, like up to 3 years, get the following:
mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130157 Just don't worry about overclocking or going RAID for a couple months... shouldn't be a problem. The good thing about this board is that it supports ddr2 OR ddr3 RAM. DDR3 - expensive, eh? Not worth it if you ask me. You could upgrade to this when the price goes down to something reasonable. DDR2 - actually cheaper than the RAM for the other mobo's, but not as fast. This mobo will let you CrossFire in full 16x x 16x 4870s. Expensive as hell but gets you set for the long run. You will need a bigger PSU, too. Like one of these. EDIT: haha posted this before I saw your response. You're going to need to put your url's into a coded format (or whatever it's called), such as [url=blah blah blah]word/phrase[ /url] (without the space between [ and /). Right now the links you posted are unusable since they're length is greater than the width of the website at 1280x1024 resolution. Last edited by toothman : 07-21-2008 at 09:27 PM. |

GPU PCI-E slots don't mean nothing other than 1 PCI-E slot supports 2.0, neither does the ATI card suggestion, Nvidia's GPU for spanking gaming: GPU card compairing! Re: need some input on a build
0.o it would appear that the 9800gtx, with some models at a similar price to the radeon 4850, are superior.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150287 and OMGmissinglink's link. What's bothering me is the huge price range on the 9800gtx's for sale... btw a pcie 2.0 gives better performance with a pcie 2.0 gpu than a 1.0 does with a 2.0 gpu... that's why the new slot was developed. And the 4800's are PCIe 2.0 gpu's. It's too late and I'm going to go to bed, but tomorrow I'll get benchmark comparisons to you. Get some mathcraft going >= | Last edited by toothman : 07-21-2008 at 11:34 PM. |
