New Computer: Someone, Please Verify Compatibility
Hello everyone,
I chose all of my following parts from www.newegg.com listing only the item numbers. I am planning on making the jump to quadcore once they work out all the bugs, but will OC the selected CPU to around 3.2ghz in the meantime. I will also be purchasing an extra VGA in the future for an SLI setup. If you have any suggestions for alternate parts, I would be very grateful. I look forward to hearing back from you! Re: New Computer: Someone, Please Verify Compatibility
Well, the setup you have looks fine...though I would recommend skipping the PCI case fan...I find them to be garbage in general...and the case you have picked out already has a fan sitting right on top of the vga.
You have a very nice CPU cooler picked out...and it seems quite expensive compared to the rest of your build...think about lowering the price of this part...look at the arctic cooler freezer 7 64 (amd compatible version). It works very nicely at around half the cost...it also comes with their own respectable thermal compound preapplied. As far as quads go, AMD has worked their bugs out, so you can pick one up if you like...just remember on their newest quads they have bumped speeds up a little, but have done so by using extra power...so the TDP of those chips is much higher. Right now Intel is ahead of the game...probably by a good 6-9 months...on the high end stuff...so you might want to think about looking at an intel cpu and compatible board...something like the e8400, or a quad if you really want that. You also have the advantage of much better overclocks with intel... |

Re: New Computer: Someone, Please Verify Compatibility
Hey,
Thanks for the feed back! I went ahead and dropped the Zalman heatsink for the Arctic Cooling Freezer like you said, much better buy without a doubt. I was sort of worried about the Zalman not having enough clearance with the heat pipes on the mobo anyway, so thank you for recommending this to me and putting my mind to rest. With the CPU im probably going to wait for prices to a drop a bit more with AMD before I make the jump. Ive never really been much an Intel fan to be honest, always gone with AMD but thank you for your suggestions none the less. If I may, which would be better, the 8800GT XFX card or would the 8800GT from EVGA be a better buy? I know its just splitting hairs but its my first build and I really want to be happy with all the parts and have no regrets. Ive checked around on various sites for the differences but I still cant seem to make up my mind. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you! |

Re: New Computer: Someone, Please Verify Compatibility
Between those two I would shop by price...I think both have good warranties (I believe both have lifetime, though xfx has a double lifetime...which means you can sell it and the buyer has lifetime as well).
I do have to say that I'm a fan of evga's dual slot cooler design they have on some of their 8800gt cards...it blows the hot air out of the case instead of circulating it inside...though you do loose the one slot... |
