Cannot install OS on newly built comp

I recently build a computer for myself.

LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model DH-20A4P-04 - OEM
XION II XON-101 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply - Retail
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
XFX PVT88SFDDU GeForce 8800 GS XXX 384MB 192-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
Logitech 967973-0403 Black PS/2 Standard Deluxe 250 Desktop Mouse Included - OEM
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 - Retail
A-DATA Vitesta 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model ADQVD1B16K - Retail
MSI P6N Diamond LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

I pluged in everything where it is supposed to go, led lights work, fans work.

My friend let me borrow his windows vista ultimate 64 bit he bought from tigerdirect, it's an OEM. I tried to install it on my system. it failed about 30% during the "expanding files" process. I couldnt move the mouse nor press capslock on the keyboard. the comp was completely frozen. I tried this 2-6 more times. I had my friend make a copy of the disk to see if that disk will work, still no. the disk worked on my friends comp but not mine.. =/

Also when I booted with the disk inside and didnt press a key to boot the dvd, it came up with "bootmgr is missing pres ctrl + alt+ del to reboot" I did that for like 2 minutes and i manually rebooted.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem?

right now I'm going to try the latest version of Ubuntu

Re: Cannot install OS on newly built comp

I would recommend doing a memtest...see if the modules are good...

For XP you have to press a button to boot to the xp cd, if you don't it goes to the next device...I'm guessing vista is the same.

While you're messing around, you might as well go into the BIOS and make sure your temps are good.

Re: Cannot install OS on newly built comp

Well that's good and bad I suppose...Some more questions that might or might not be relevant:

Were you able to install your distro with no issue?

Have you tried updating the BIOS of your board?

Just for fun I would try removing one memory stick, or moving your sticks around while attempting your install. That would completely eliminate them as an issue...

One last thing you could try: take your HDD and stick it in your buddies computer and attempt to install Vista on it. If it doesn't install, it's the HDD or disk.

Good luck...hopefully it's something simple...
