Planning to Build a New comp: First time builder(Suggestions please please)

Guys,

I am a first time builder and my requirements are:

1) My budget is below 2000.
2) I will be using it for some gaming and also some work purposes.
3) I have selected a list of components and i feel i am lacking something, like inadequate cooling.

The list of components is:

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...shListTitle=My

How does the components look. I have 2 cases in it. Which one is the better one. which one would you guys suggest for my components.

How does the list look, Please suggest if any changes are needed.

HOW Difficult is it to assemble a computer. I think i may need Water cooling as i have 2 graphics cards.

i am really afraid as this is my first time assembling a comp. what do you guys suggest?

Re: Planning to Build a New comp: First time builder(Suggestions please please)

I don't know why, but you also have 3 video cards in there. The 9800 was sort of a flop since nvidia jumped the gun on their release, so you might want to wait until a GTX 200 - series card becomes affordable. One of these will arguably compete with two 9800GTX's, and have better technologies included.

For cooling, you have more than adequate with your case selection, although if you're going for cheap, these cases are not it. If there's one place to save money on a build, it's the case. But it's understandable if the way your computer looks is important to you.

The only things I would look at in that build are your ram, and your power supply choice.

Those memory timings don't reflect the level of performance that the rest of the system has. If you're going to be using a 32-bit OS, then 4GB will not make sense until you switch over to a 64-bit one. It's also a little bit pricey, considering that 2gb (2x1gb) of the same brand with 4-4-4-12 is 30 dollars after rebate, making 60 with the 2 per household rebate after the checks come back.

The power supply you have chosen is obscene. I wouldn't trust that company since I haven't heard anything about them. You could probably get by with comparatively less wattage as long as you have enough rails for your indicated SLI setup. Quality is important here.

With some tweaks, you could probably do what you have for 1600 or so. Anything more, I think would be overkill.

Also, don't forget a hard drive :)

Looks like a good build so far, keep us posted

Thank you for the reply. I wanted to put 2 9800GTX in SLI, is 9800GTX a really bad card. Which one would be a better card for around $400.

I want a good looking comp, so i went for a good case. which one is the better one(from my list) , the cooler master or the Thermaltake case.

Do you think i need water cooling.

I also just ordered logitech Z-5500 Audio speakers for my new Comp. Any suggestions on a new Audio card.

One Thing, I am really afraid of assembling the system. Any manuals anywhere on how to assembling and how to apply the thermal paste and other configurations.

Any suggestions on a better power source.

I just completed my first build a few weeks ago, and I can say its not difficult at all! Im by no means a "handy" person and ended up doing quite well. Just read all the documents that come with the parts and its pretty straight forward.

I would suggest you follow the the link at the top of this forum titled "how to bench test your system" How to Bench Test Your System

What it teaches you to do, is assemble all the components outside the case, in a step by step format. This helps elimnate potential problems along the way. My first attempt at assembling all the pieces was flawed by a motherboard short, but after I followed the step by step method outlined in the post I was able to fix the error and run the new system without a flaw.

That's definitely a better brand. Also, there's a sale on a 1000w corsair here. Might even be overkill for the system, but it's cheap insurance if those 9800's draw as much as I think they might.

Also for the video cards, you might want to take a look at the Radeon HD4870 w/the 512MB of GDDR5 (yes, you read that right). BB has it for 300 (here). It's rumored to compete directly with the newer nvidia cards at hundreds less.

Review: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341

Interesting that nvidia somehow manages to have a less power hungry card with the GTX series

Re: Planning to Build a New comp: First time builder(Suggestions please please)

The 9800gtx cards blow hot air outside the case...so no, you should be okay on air...though if you don't like the noise, then maybe think about water.
