Building a new rig...
Hey guys, so it's come to the time to build a new rig. I gota get one built kinda fast so i can give my bro my current one. Anyways I'm looking to spend about 1000 on this computer, it's going to be for gaming. I've been doing as much research as I can, but being so busy makes it hard to find everything out. I'm trying to figure out if i want to go AMD or Intel... from everything i've been reading, it sounds like Intel is kicking ***. But then i don't know if i want to go quad or dual core for gaming... if Quad, i saw this processor and it looks great... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017
For the motherboard.... i want to buy a chipset that i'm going to be able to upgrade in a year or two. I don't want to buy a chipset and then a few months later they stop making processors for that chipset. So if anyone knows the most recent chipset released by intel that's best for gaming that would be awesome. So i'm thinking of a setup kind of like this... -Not too sure about the case or power supply yet. -Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Most likely or E8400 of dual core -Not sure about which motherboard -Not sure about RAM -Either a 1GB 8800GT or 512mb 8800gt... not too sure, I heard most games don't use 1GB of vid memory yet... Also, is there any real reason to get Vista ultimate over premium for someone like me? Thanks guys. |

Re: Building a new rig...
amd is lacking as of late so yes intel have been kicking amd in the teeth. as for quad core or duel core i recommend duel core since quad kill is overkill for current games since they dont utilize all 4 core so the duel core should be good enough for multitasking and gaming.
as for video card i would go with the 512mb 8800gt. for a case i have this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133021 ram you would want 2gigs min and up to 4gig to future proof your rig somewhat give me sometime and i will configure a rig for you. also do u need a new monitor and os or do you already have that. |

Re: Building a new rig...
Hey man thanks for the help alot so far.
I'll probably go with the E8400 for my processor, I just want to make sure going with that chipset provides me the option of upgrading in the future. What kind of ram do you recommend? I'll probably get 2 sticks of 2gig, but not sure what one to get for the money. I'm going to need to buy vista, thinking of either getting Premium or Ultimate, is there a real benefit for the extra 100 dollars of buying Ultimate? And for monitor, i was looking at.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009094 case i was thinking about http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146047 that case seems to have great cooling, and i currently have the NZXT LEXA and i've had no problems with it. Well i'll wait for your reply, thanks alot. |

Re: Building a new rig...
Hey sweet man, thanks for the help... i think the changes i'm going to make are as follow...
Vid Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130319 Bought this exact one for the comp i have now, runs great. Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009094 I know the contrast ratio isn't as good, but is there even much of a difference between 1000:1 and 700:1? Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136011 Going to grab the raptor for increased speeds, i actually have the one you listed for backup use. PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182030 I'm not sure if i need a Power supply stronger than 550 Watts for the RAM, is that the best type of gaming memory to go with? I may do 4 gigs not too sure. Also don't know about the MOBO, if that's a good one to go with or not. And for OP System: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116204 Thanks for the help man, the only thing i'm thinking about changing is the RAM and MOBO... other than that it looks like a great comp! |

Re: Building a new rig...
oh yeah, also does anyone know if the LGA775 chipset has much of a lifespan left?
Oh and for MOBO i'm looking between these two... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128082 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128337 I'm not sure which to go with, they are both relatively the same, except that the first one can support DDR3 memory, i'm not sure if that's worth the extra money... The PSU i listed was a rosewill... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182030
do you think 550Watts is insufficient for this system? |

Re: Building a new rig...
sweet find on the PSU thanks man... just a few questions and i'll be set to go...
1: Between these two monitors... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001262 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009094 What monitor would you recommend? They are both pretty much the same except that the first one has a contrast ratio of 1000:1 while the other is 700:1... would it be noticeably different? or should i save 40 dollars? 2: I'm looking between these two mobos... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128082 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128337 Now i'm wondering if the first one is worth going with because it can support DDR3 memory. Would DDR3 be much faster than DDR2 or what? If so, On newegg under the DDR3 1333 i see PC10600 and PC10666... which one would i be looking at purchasing for this mobo? 3: I also see on these mobos that it can support a FSB of 1600mhz, but the processor only has a FSB of 1333mhz.. would the processor bottleneck the FSB at 1333mhz? i think that's about all, thanks alot in advance |

Re: Building a new rig...
i use a samsung hdtv and are very happy with it
i don't think there is much between the 2 you listed i would go with second one personally as it gives you the option of ddr3 when the prices become reasonable 3/ it allows you to upgrade to the faster cpu as they become available

Re: Building a new rig...
Cool thanks for the feedback man. not sure what monitor i'm going to go with yet, depends on how much cash i have i guess. I'll definitely get the mobo with the DDR3.... i'm just unsure if i get PC10600 or PC10666 under the DDR3 1333.... would it make a difference?
For now, would it be better to go with 4 gigs of DDR2 like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166 or 2 gigs of DDR3 like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145183 what would run faster since both are about the same price?
