Having trouble getting a display on my monitor
Ok. I've built probably about 10 computers. Started with a 300A celeron processor up to my last successful one which is a 4400X2 amd, pci-e radeon 1650 pro, 2gb of ddr2. Well a friend of my girlfriend asked me to build him a computer and he had his heart set on building an SLI setup which I had never done before so I was excited to try it out. We got him a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 motherboard, an AMD (AM2 socket) 6000 dual core, two MSI overclocked 8800GTS geforce video cards(PCI-E of course), 2gb of ddr2 ram... I think that's all the substantial information except the power supply is a 600 watt power supply so that is fine. So I put the thing together, got all the stuff in the right pins, but his power supply is odd because there's seperate connectors for each of the power cords so you only have to hook up what power cords you need into the power supply. Cool idea, I thought at first, but then I found that it didn't have a 4-pronged power thing for the motherboard slot right above the processor. I tried hooking up one of the 6-prongs to it, but as I figured the PC wouldn't even turn on. To make things more interesting, the speaker prongs for my case connectors only had 4 prongs and the case itself had 7 connectors on it so I can't even get the speakers working so I have no beeps...
I can tell something isn't right cause even when it does cut on I don't get any display at all. the monitor just acts like it's not connected to anything. Tried it on three different monitors. Took out one of the video cards... still a no go. I read on one post on newegg where I got the motherboard that someone was having trouble getting the computer to boot up with more than one memory stick in it, so I tried that and it still didn't work. I looked up the gigabyte website and they have absolutely nothing on troubleshooting the problem I'm having. I will say that the video cards do work as I have my buddy's parts at my house now in an attempt to work on it a little longer. I tested both in my system and they run great. The memory also works fine. The processor, I haven't tested in my system yet, but as I bought it brand new I am sure it works fine. I'm thinking maybe there's a problem with the motherboard, but I'm not quite sure. Maybe it's just a user error and I'm overlooking something. I have everything hooked in to the power supply except for that one 4 pronged hookup, but I know that wouldn't cause the computer to not boot up. I've seen that before. When I do boot it up, I notice that all the fans take a second to get going, whereas in my system they immediately go full blast as soon as I turn it on. So... any thoughts anyone? |

Re: Having trouble getting a display on my monitor
hehe the 4 pins connector does cause the pc not booting up. it's powering the cpu.
do you have an 8 pins connector (or 2x4pins) from your power supply unit? you're supposed to use that one. some newer high end motherboard have 8 pins instead of 4. so some high end power supply unit have 8 or 2x4pins instead of just one 4 pins. |

Re: Having trouble getting a display on my monitor
I actually see a connector on the back of the power supply so that I could potentially hook up and 8-pronged cable. I'm not seeing one, though. Thanks for the advice, though. Gonna see if I left any of the power supply cables. You've been helpful :P
