Motherboard Specs

i found this forum today trying to fingure out terms that i don't understand. I found this search engine for specific motherboards but i don't know what socket i want, what drive support i should have, or what an isa slot is. can anyone answer my questions? i already know that i want one pcie x16 slot, and i don't want any video or sound accesories on it. i want to keep everything on pci expansions to maximize my computer speed. but i've never done this before and would appreciate some help...
