[SOLVED] New built PC resetting

hey i wasn't sure where to put this, but since i built the PC i thought it should be put here

awhile ago i made a custom PC, i upgraded it with an ASrock 4coredual-SATA2 mother board and an intel dual core 2, it ran fine for a couple of weeks before it started resetting, now most of the time it will start for 5seconds-2minutes then reset and nothing will come up on the monitor, and the red circled LED will not come on. (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1.../013.jpg((date on cam is wrong))

Sometimes it will start up, the monitor will come on and the LED will turn on, then it will reset 30 mins later... im completely stumped as to what im ment to do.

Specs
PCU: Intel dual core 2
Motherboard: ASrock 4coredual-SATA2
video card: ATI radeon X1950PRO
Memory: 1024 mb RAM
OS: windows XP
HDD: 40GB with OS on it
and a second 250GB one

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...idante/013.jpg
...can't seem to edit my post, anyway.
Brand is Antec and wattage is 500W max.
Computer switches off to fast for me to check the BIOS.

Okay it stayed on long enough and i was able to check the temp its 57°C/138°C

Re: New built PC resetting

redo the paste on the cpu with some arctic silver
http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm
you need to cut the cpu temp in half
check it has not been caused by one of the fan h/s pins popping up

Re: New built PC resetting

once the heatsink is disturbed the paste has to be cleaned off and reapplied
the paste makes the surfaces flat and so the cpu and h/s mate together so as to transfer the heat efficiently
although the surfaces look flat to the naked eye they are not sufficienty flat to transfer the heat without the paste
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=Arctic+Silver
when applying you need to follow the instructions as to little or to much has virtually the same effect

Re: New built PC resetting

what are the temperatures reading now? 57*C is way too high. What is your ambient temperature? Is the airflow in your case adequate?

Re: New built PC resetting

57 to 24 is a really dramatic temp decrease...you must have had the heatsink seated improperly.

I hate to say it but it sounds as though you may have damaged your processor. My old chip got a small rust spot on it from a water cooling accident. It would not stay on for more than about 5 minutes, and would reset every minute or so after it warmed up. I found the processor to be the culprit by under-clocking the machine to 1.8Ghz (2.4ghz stock) at which point the machine ran stable.

You could try to do the same and see if the machine stabilizes, or just RMA the processor (hopefully you still can) and see if that changes anything.

This is a one man's opinion...I'd suggest you wait for others (TSF hardware techs in particular) to give their input.

Re: New built PC resetting

What is under clocking?

ASrock recommend no overclocking, what is it?

edit: i think my PSU is duff, i flicked the switch at the back of the PSU and it turned itself on the switched off 5 seconds after -.-
