New system, keeps powering off on its own
I can't seem to figure out the problem I'm having so hopefully someone here can help me out. I put together a performance/gaming PC this past thursday using the following parts:
Coolermaster cosmos 1000 case Corsair TX series 750W power supply Intel DX48BT2 motherboard Intel Q9300 processor OCZ Gold DDR3-1333Mhz 2Gb kit eVGA GeForce 9800GTX 512Mb WD 150Gb Raptor + Seagate 500Gb SATAII Pioneer DVD-RW Samsung 32" LCD TV + Dell 20" widescreen monitor I put everything together, made sure all the connections were made and were tight (3 connections on the mobo: 24pin, 4x2 pin, and 12V 4x1 pin), 2 PCI-E 3x2 pin connections from the PSU to the graphics card, and other appropriate connections to the hard drives/DVD drive. The first time I powered it up, the fans started spinning for a second and then stopped... I tried again, same thing. After that I just disconnected some cables and reconnected them, tried again, and same thing. Being the persistant individual that I am, I tried the power button again, and voila - it turned on! There seemed to be some corruption of the bios as I was getting a bunch of letters and number scrolling on the screen instead of the blue Intel splash screen on startup, so I took out the motherboard's battery, reset the bios, and tried again. Everything worked fine, I installed windows and everything seemed to be doing what it's supposed to. So I decided to test out the graphics by running some video games (crysis demo to begin with) - a minute into the game, the system rebooted. It kept doing this at different times of the game, but it wouldn't run the game for longer than 15 minutes. I decided to switch the power supply - the system began doing the same thing as before: fans spin for a second, then powers down, then starts for 3 seconds, powers down, then starts for good. No change in my ability to play video games. Also, the bios splash screen reverted back to the 'corrupted' looking version with the letters and numbers instead of the intel logo. I was still able to get into windows, and everything seemed stable as long as I didn't do anything graphic intensive. I switched the video card to an ATI X1600 I had laying around and got the same thing: fans spin for a second, then powers down, then starts for 3 seconds, powers down, then starts for good. I didn't try crysis with this configuration, for obvious reasons. So I've ruled out the PSU, and the video card. The only time I recieved a beep from the mobo was today (1 long beep, 2 short beeps - error with the video adapter). It only happened once though. Oddly, I don't even get that 1 beep on startup when the computer properly boots into windows. I'm totally stumped, and the only thing I can think of is that I have a defective motherboard. Any suggestions? I'm not looking forward to the RMA process... Edit: Bios has been flashed with latest update through a windows based updater - no change in the above mentioned problem. I also ran MemTest on the memory and the results were perfect. Last edited by eesh : 05-05-2008 at 03:37 PM. |

Re: New system, keeps powering off on its own
Maybe a grounding issue. Try taking out all of the computer parts off the case and re-seat them again. Turn on the computer and see if you get the same issue. Hope this helps.
