My ideas...
Intel Core2 Duo 3.0ghz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115028

2-4gb RAM DDR2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227089

150gb HDD (For OS), 500gb HDD (For games) http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category...me=Hard-Drives

GPU 8800GT or any of the 8 seriers http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...GeForce+8800GT

If you take a look at my rig <<<< It gives you an idea of what some people use as a gaming PC.
Its cost me about $8000-$10000 and im still continuing to upgrade it every 2-6months just to keep up.

Also dont forget to get a good PSU, just throwing in any can damage your system. Look for Thermaltake, OCZ, Silverstone, ect ect

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

The Nvidia 8 series have some problems with some games dont they? I personally cant play AD 1701 on it(8600GT), and in the Nvidia forums some folks seems to have problems with Cossacks series too?

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

I have an ASUS 8800GTS 640mb and ive never had any problems with it. An 8600GT is a low end card (Budget gamer) the 7900GT can out run that card.

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

I request your pardon if this is hijacking but really, that game is supposed to run on :• Geforce 3/Ti 200• Geforce 4/Ti 4800• Geforce PCX 5300• Geforce FX 5500• Geforce FX 5600• Geforce FX 5700• Geforce FX 5750• Geforce FX 5900• Geforce FX 5950• Geforce 6200• Geforce 6500• Geforce 6600• Geforce 6800• Geforce 7800• Geforce 7900
I frankly hope to goodness that the 8600GT isnt somehow inferior to all those cards in some way?I should have asked on here which card to get,I regret not doing that.

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

im fine with all discussion on here its all a benefit to me

but $8000 to $10000 lol i work as a bloody filing/scanning assistant i dont think im going to go that top end.

all im really bothered about is that my pc can comfortably run Elder scrolls 4 :oblivion

so i dont really want dual core, i have no need for it.
150gb hard drive is more than i will use as all it will be storing is software, my music etc is on my 250gb external HD.

am i right in thinking the general feel of the posts is to say that a 7900 gt gforce card would be better than an 8 series?

and i take it my Gforce FX 5200 (or 5400 dnt remember which) is complately pants?

thanks for all the posotive response!

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

Im still going to strongly suggest you look into buying a dual core, all games today as well as other applications use dual core and so do motherboards. It doesn't cost that much to buy one, its about the same as a single core but you get about double the performance.

corsair: The 7900GT can out perform a 8600GT very well, playing CS:S you can have upto 40fps difference. The 8600GT uses the latest Nvidia tech but the core, shader and memory (plus memory bandwidth) are all slower than the leading 7900GT.
Also the 8800GT out performs the latest 9600GT. Again the 9600GT is a budget card as well, you will have to wait for the 9800GT or the 9900GT to be released if you want beter performance than the 8 series.

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

most everything will utilize 2 cores now, including your operating system. dual core isnt only for hardcore multitasking anymore. for video card, im going to shut up so that this goes somewhat smoothely. anyway, i would highly encourage dual core right now. its hard to find decent single core. AMD still has a few but not many. intel ditched them with netburst

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

so this 7900 GT is that a NVIDIA one or another manufacturer?

if everyone suggests its ok then thats what ill go with for a video card.

and as for dual core, i thought it just meant that you could run two system heavy operations at the same time?
which i dont do, i either download or play games... one or the other.

im really unsure about *** a motherboard is/does so ill leave that one out, as far as i know its the one thing on your PC youi cant change?
does it make a difference to my games?
thats all i care about =P

again with my processor i dnt care about the make or stuff like that ijust want 3ghz minimum so i can comfortabely play games like:

TES 3 & 4
Unreal 3 and other FPS games

thanks for everyones suggestions

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

not anymore. most apps will use both cores very well and you will see quite a performance increase over single core. the motherboard you can change however it really wont affect much as long as you have a decent northbridge (in this case, the P35).

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

what kind of budget are you working with? I have to agree with Forcifer & Karlos that Dual Core is the way to go. For less than 1000USD you could build one heck of a computer that will serve you nicely for years.

Re: A Bit Of Fun For Everyone

Gore, settle down mate. Grab a John Smith's and take a breath as it's not as bad as you think. First off, these guys are good with thier advice although some will take you to the top end :) :)

Anyway, a good place to use to compare video cards is GPU Review. That will maybe give you an idea about the difference in performance between them.

As for the CPU, I put together a little spread sheet to compare CPUs for my build and the E8400 was the best value and are reasonalble as far as price. Next where the E6550 and E6570 (both about the same) that were good pow for the pound.

You didn't mention what type of motherboard you were going to get or currently have that all this new stuff is going on nor did I see anything on the power supply. With a new shiny CPU and graphics card, you may need to think about that power supply being able to handle it. Depends on what you get, but, needs to be considered.

Finally, as was mentioned, need to have some idea of a budget to work with here and then you can get some specifics going.
