First time build, Mobo question
Okay, I'm looking to build a gaming comp., and price isn't really a big matter but I am new at this so bear with me. Assuming I get an intel e8400 (friend is giving me his), how can I tell what motherboards will work with it, and then how do I know which video cards will work with that?
edit: Would something like http://www.web-tronics.com/inpe4so775mo.html work? Last edited by itshaff86; 03-23-2008 at 09:53 AM. |

Re: First time build, Mobo question
No, that board does not support CPUs that run on a 1333mhz FSB (such as the E8400)
This one will work great for you. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128083 BTW, awesome friend. If he needs, anymore friends to give killer CPUs to have him to PM me.

Re: First time build, Mobo question
I've built one computer, so I wouldn't say I'm an expert, but I have a good idea of what it takes for compatibility via my own trial and error in the process. To my knowledge what it takes for a CPU to be compatible with a motherboard is simply the socket type, in which case yours is LGA 775 according to Newegg, and of course the front system bus, in which case yours is 1333Mhz if the CPU listed on the Newegg page I linked is the same as yours. Now the motherboard you linked has the same socket type, but the FSB only goes to 800Mhz, so I would say that motherboard will not work with your CPU if yours is 1333Mhz. Right in the description it states the motherboard you're looking at is specified for Pentium 4 - CPU: Supports Intel P4 LGA775 Processors (800/533 MHz FSB). You've got a Dual Core processor and those puppies purr at a great rate of 1,000 megahertz or greater, so you need a motherboard that can work with that. May I suggest something along the lines of the following?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131187 It's $30 cheaper and gives you a lot more for your money. ASUS is a good name brand. I've found over time that name brands are important in finding the right parts for a computer. Compatibility is most important, but if you want reliability with your parts, trust in a good name brand. I hope I helped. Good luck building your new PC. Peace. |

Re: First time build, Mobo question
Awesome feedback!! I honestly didn't expect that much info so quickly, 2nd post and I love this site already lol. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the 2nd motherboard (can't turn down something cheaper, even it is only $30
) but another stupid question!! How do I pick a proper PSU, Video card and cooling system? I have a HDD, moniter, mouse/keyboard, and I think that is all I need? Like I said in my first post, this is my first time building and although I know some about computers, I'm obviously no expert so bear with me

Re: First time build, Mobo question
Please Read This Before Posting
Please answer the questions in the link above. That way we can address all your build needs as quickly as possible. If you're looking to shave cost this board is basically the same as the 1st one I linked to with a few less features and weaker cooling. (cooling is just as good as the Asus board) It has a newer chipset than the Asus board and is full ATX board. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128059 |

Re: First time build, Mobo question
Sorry about that Mattlock, got a little overexcited I guess and skipped that "Read Before you Post" Post.
1. Budget: Not really a big deal, pref. $500 but more than willing to go over 2. Brands: Open to any trusted brands 3. Multitasking: Maybe 20% of the time, mostly just gaming 4. Gaming: New games, all time spent on the computer when not using it for homework 5. Calculations: Nothing 6. Overclocking: No idea 7. Storage: Have storage covered for the time being, 300gb HDD, will probably upgrade to a newer one eventually or if you guys think it is needed 8. Legacy Support: Don't think so 9. Operating System: Window's XP or Vista 10. Case: Have a case 11. Accessories: Have KB, Mouse 12. Recycled Components: Using old HDD, Mouse, KB and Monitor 13. Monitor: Have a 22' lcd 14. Stores: Newegg seems to be a good one, but any are fine 15. Location: US Sorry again for skipping this earlier. And in your opinion is the first MB listed worth the extra $50~ compared to the 3rd? |

Re: First time build, Mobo question
No need to apologize. I just seen this getting to the point where we answer one question then you ask another, so figured this way we could address as many questions at one time as possible.
I have the EP35 and love it, but if you don't plan on overclocking your system, or run a crossfire setup then you'll be fine with the P35-DS3L for $96. The biggest negative with newer motherboards built on Intel chipsets is the lack of IDE connectors. So is you plan on using an IDE hard drive and IDE CD/DVD drives then you'll want to look at a different board or get an IDE controller card. Let know if your hard drive is IDE or SATA. P35-DS3L for $96 shipped http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128059 8800GTS with Crysis $239 after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130312 2GB Kit Corsair XMS2 DDR800 $30 after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034 Coolermaster Real Power Pro 750w $100 after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171024 Or Antec Trio 650w $100 no rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371001 With Trio 650w power supply $518 - $70 in rebates = $448 With Real Power Pro 750w power supply $548 - $100 in rebates = $448 |
