Restarts

Right after I got done building my computer and turned it on, about 3 seconds later it restarted and it did that twice. I didn't get any beeps from my motherboard, and I've checked all my power connections. What could cause this?

Re: Restarts

What did you use for a thermal solution between your CPU and your Heatsink? How did you put it on?

Re: Restarts

I used the heatsink that came with my Intel Core 2 Duo and the thermal pad it came with. I don't really know how to explain how I got it on but I was having trouble with it and ended up having to take my motherboard out to get it on.

Those pads do work, but not nearly as well as Artic Silver 5. Also, once you take a heatsink and fan apart for ANY reason once they have been seated, you must clean off the old and apply new paste to keep from having hot spots between the CPU and Heatsink.

Restarting just sounds like a heat issue to me. I would get some Artic Silver 5 and redo it and see if that helps the restarting issue. It restarts IMHO (no guarantees) usually like that when it gets too hot.

Re: Restarts

I think I'll get a new heatsink too seeing as my dad grabbed some plyers and bent it to hell to get it fit and we reapplied the heatsink about 4-5 times just to get it on there.
I knew the problem was do to overheating now maybe he'll beleive me after he sees this post. Thank you.

Re: Restarts

Let us know how it comes out and if we can help, let us know. There is no guarantee it is overheating, but that would be my guess from what you have said. If it was a short, normally, it would just shut down and not restart until you pressed the Off/on button again.

Re: Restarts

I forgot to mention, that if it might have become warped when grabbing it and bending it with pliers, then that alone could keep the seal between the heatsink and CPU from forming the proper bond. Then, you have hot spots that will cause it to shut down or it can even damage the CPU. Just forgot to mention that one, so I would not attempt to try it again until you take care of that issue and get a new heatsink and Artic Silver 5.
