Built New computer... it wont boot

Hello Guys,

So I built a new computer that I ordered from newegg today. I have built many computers before this one, but I am having some problems.

I am going to list my specs then post pictures and the problem.

Specs:
Case: Apevia X-Naviagtor-ATXA9NW WITH 500W PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144125

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4 AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128014

CPU: AMD|A64 X2 4800+ 2.5g AM2 65N R
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103212

Video Card: VGA SAPPHIRE 100220L 2600XT 256 MB SLI Ready
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102708

Memory: 1GX2 CORSAIR TWIN 2X2048-6400 DDR2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590

Sound Card - XIFI Card, not so much important
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102007

HDD: Seagate 120GB IDE

Now, I had the HDD from the old computer and everything else was new. I checked newegg... Everything was compatible, except for the fact the 2600 XT takes 550w it says, but I only have 500w..
So that could be why it doesn't load? But wouldn't they most likely not need all that power except in dire situations, meaning if board worked and I installed that it should load?

Well I Properly installed, I made sure I touched metal first. I mounted the MOBO, Added the CPU and heatsink, thermalpaste already applied. Then I put in the Video card, then the memory... then mounted my HDD and my drives. Next I hooked up all the front panel connectors, power switch etc.. installed the 24v atx connector and 4v.... plugged in all the fans properly.. I checked it all... and when I turn it on...
It flickers for a half second as if it got power, then shuts off, reinstalled my crap many times, each checking to see if i had one something wrong.
I even checked the anodes + and - to make sure they were right on the front panel..

Now I Have a 400w psu but i dont think that would cut it... to check the psu, it has to be a dead board... but I wanted to get some ideas... I will post some pictures.

Now Its hard to see.. but I have double checked most of what I could... I know that either it doesnt get enough power or the board is deffective... I saw no burnt spots on the bottomn to indicate that it got fried... So I just need some advice.. filed for a RMA from newegg.

It just wont post at all... I have the speaker enabled... but I don't hear any of the beeps to indicate what is wrong. I can't hear them, I dont know if its because of the mob and ac'97 audio and HD audio which standard first is HD audio or if because even though the speaker was connected to the front panel it has nothing to speak out of ? But shouldn't it beep regardless if its plugged in?

Re: Built New computer... it wont boot

Hi

I think the problem there is with your PSU as the PSUs that come with computer cases are generally of poor quality and have problems supplying their rated wattage of power and their voltage rails fluctuate greatly which can damage components. Also for the wattage the rule of thumb is to add 30% to the wattage you need to allow for degredation over time.

A very good psu for the money is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153034, this should supply all the power you need and will last for a long time, it may seem a little pricey but its worth it.

Good luck with it.

While the power supply may not be enough to pull it, this actually sounds like you may have a short someplace. Have you double checked to make sure that you have only one motherboard post for each hole...no more, no less?

Take it out of the case and built it on a piece of cardboard or on a non-conductive surface starting only with the CPU/Heatsink/Fan plugged in to the motherboard. Add 1 stick of ram, the ATX connector, the +12 molex connected to the motherboard, keyboard and mouse, and the Off/On switch. Turn it on and see if it stays on. If it does, add something.

I do agree that you need a more powerful power supply with this rig, so you need to also take care of that issue.

Re: Built New computer... it wont boot

Not enough power from your PS will not short the board out, it would just not allow you to boot up. But you might get a small hint of life with a lower supply... not certain on that though. I would do the out of the case build to check it out first.

One thing that's important is to make sure your motherboard speaker is hooked up (and correctly). If you did hook it up turn it around just to make sure you didn't accidentally hook it up backwards (this is easy to do since there is no keying).
