Building first PC. Please Help!!

Hi there,

I am a new forum member I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have decided to build my first pc. So far I have the following in mind and was wondering if you could give me any tips on what else may be needed or if you think the following will not work well together:

Mother board : Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
Memory : OCZ Tech Special Ops Edition 2GB DDR2 DIMM
Have not decided on which Graphics card but it will be Nvidia 8Series

I already have a 200GB Hard Drive and a Power Supply and all Drives I need.

Could you also please advise on a CPU fan.

Many Thanks for your help

Re: Building first PC. Please Help!!

Several questions...........Are you gonna overclock? Is this for gaming or general use? How big is the Power Supply and is it AMD rated?(Clean power is a must for AMD) And last what case are you gonna use?(cooling is vital) Let me know.

Re: Building first PC. Please Help!!

Hi there,

Thanks for replying - having looked at the PSU i have I may need to buy a new one so I am all for advice on that to. I am looking at spending around £500 or so - I was hoping to use the optical drives from the pc i already have. I think i may end up gettin a new case as the one i have at the moment doesn't have space for a fan in the front of it.

Another question is can i use my XP os I already have all I got with the pc was a recovery disk.

Yes I want to use this for gaming I like most First Person Shooters so I know it needs to be good graphically.

Don't know how to overclock so probably not.

I was wondering if you could inform of good graphics cards around £150 for it please.

Thanks for your quick responses.

Re: Building first PC. Please Help!!

Ok well since your in the UK, I figured I would check out the site I recommend thats there. Might as well save money on postage and all that. First the case. http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(16013)...lack-full.aspx
This case is awesome and is the ultimate gaming case in my opinion. You had mentioned fans, well this one has many fans including a huge 200mm. Problem is it doesn't have a power supply. but thats easy to fix. http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(17482)...U--3-year.aspx
This is a gamers PSU. 600watts of pure power and a huge 3 year warranty. And its on sale and by a great company, not a fly by night one. The above two items will give you a massive amount of cooling, power and upgradability. And now lets look at video. There are hundreds of options but since your leaning towards nvidia let go with http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(22392)...-PCIE-DVI.aspx
Its a great card, 512mb and is a great price. Now put these with all your other items and you have a screaming PC with alot of future gaming to come. Now on to the xp issue. It depends on who made your old pc. If its a Gateway then there is a folder on the disk with the OS and it can reinstalled. If its HP or Dell you will need to get back with me and I will guide you through it. No matter what the manufactures claim, you can use that OS on any pc you wish. They just want you to buy there stuff yet again. Well let me know.

Re: Building first PC. Please Help!!

The 512MB 8600GT is no faster than the 256MB version because of the lower end GPU chipset. Go with a 256MB 8600GTS for the same price and you will get better performance.

Can you fill out the questions from the link in koala's post please?
