New build specs

im new to the forums so ide like to say hi first anyway to why im here,

i am building an Sli system, the mobo i will use has an nforce4 sli chipset, i will be running 2 xfx gforce 8500s in sli, i will be using a AMD athlon 64 x2 dual core 3800+, i have 2 160 gig IDE hdds, a DVD-rom and DVD-rewriter, double layer if that matters, 1 gig of ddr 3200 ram, an LCD temp display, 5 case fans and the TR2 cpu fan witch is pritty big

i no this system is not much more than a starter for sli but i dont think its that bad lol

the best psu calac i found says 530-570 watts
i feel i might need a bit more power but not sure

i have an XION 600 watt power suply, it is not rated as an Sli psu, but does have 30 amps on the +12v lead

will this psu be enough for the sli system i am building or do i need to try to find somethind with a bit more power
any help thx

Re: COMP nub need help comp specs

There are a number of things I would like to point out.

First is that the NF4 is rather old and you can get something like the NF560 for about the same price. You will be better off with the AM2 platform rather than the 939 platform.

The second is that the 8600GT will be about as powerful as two 8500GTs in SLi. One 8600GT will also cost quite a bit less than two 8500GTs. Better yet, you can step up to the 8600GTS for about the same price as two 8500GTs.

The third is that while that power supply is "rated" at 600W, it is not a high quality unit and will probably not put out clean and stable power. Look at a high quality 600+W unit. Post if you need help selecting one.

Re: New build specs

hmm thx for the info on the psu, but i thought xion was a good power suply, i had it in my old system and it did a good job with no problems, only thing was, it was not an sli rig, but the psu is a few years old it might be time to get a nother any ideas?

and this is not realy an upgrade, we have 3 computers and the mobo died in one , and i wanted to get something a bit better than what i had for not to much money and still be able to try out the sli atleast, and im not sure why i went with 939 rather than AM2 might have been cheaper not sure if i realy was going for a big upgrade there a lot of things i would have done different, but the new mobo is here and if it works good ill use it for a wile if not ill send it back and get a better one prob with some of the specs you sujested thx for the info

edit i just looked at the 8600gt and it priced out at $90-$100 for a single card and i payed $178.00 for the the 2 8500gts

Re: New build specs

Yep, thats what I was saying. Look at the MSI K9N Neo-F NF560 board. I believe I remember this board also supporting the Phenom. Also look at the Antec Trio 550W or 650W, and the PC Power & Cooling 610W.

Re: New build specs

i have a foxconn/winfast mobo NF4SK8AA-8EKRS

there is a 6 pin plug on the mobo(looks like the starnded power plug that would be pluged in to a HDD) other then the 4 pin plug that is used to suply power to the CPU, that is the only extra plug on the mobo
it is an sli board, so i asume the extra plug is for the added power to the mobo for a dual card set up but im not sure when and if i need to plug it in when i use dual cards
