Re: New Computer ~ Thoughts?

I would also bump down to the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ black edition and choose the AMD 790FX chipset. Go with a board like the Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 and a good heatsink like the Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro.

And why down processor?

I looked at those. (except for the artic cool). I'm trying to keep it under 1500$

Plus I have a fetish for ATI. :) I've had Nvidia problems in the past, have yet to have a ATI one.

Re: New Computer ~ Thoughts?

The MA790FX-DS5 is a higher quality board and will support the Phenom if you decide to upgrade. Additionally, the 5000+ black edition is on 65nm so it will produce much less heat. Furthermore, it has an unlocked multiplier so you can easily increase the core clock speed if you so desire without having to hassle with an FSB overclock. Another point is that the 8800GT will be much more powerful than the HD 3870 in almost every game, at least until ATi/AMD releases better drivers.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121224

If you still like the ATi card that will only hinder performance in games (although you could make up for that some by overclocking). But getting the motherboard with the 790FX chipset will definitely pay off later.

Ok, I took your advice on the MOBO, and processor. As the processer thing is pretty ingenious idea. :P I'm just lazy, but this will give the motivation(about 70$ worth)

And I downed the monitor to:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824116092

But now i'm in a lock, between a XFX 8800GS, or the 3870.

I am not a huge NVidia fan....but the XFX I hear is amazing smooth, and quiet.

But like I said above, I have never had a problem with ATI / AMD.

I see a few, trying to keep the card under 300. I see like, one card thats under 300(thats in). It doesn't fall into my want category.

Also, a questoin to throw out there, do I need a power supply of 750W? Or could I drop it down to like 600 / 550? If so, links?

I'll stick with my current PS.

After doing some research out on the net, from other reviews / video card specs, and some motherboards.

This is what I found, and like:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102719 - VC -- SAPPHIRE 100225L Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP

Something, that I have been curious about also. If a MOBO does not say 'SLI / Crossfire' supported, can it still duel card?

Re: New Computer ~ Thoughts?

How are the AMD Phenom say : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103226

compared to my current choice? Not by speed or anything, I mean compared to reliability, and is it even worth the upgrade?

Re: New Computer ~ Thoughts?

Since the 3870 is on 55nm it will easily run on a 650W power supplies with a 100W processor and several disk drives with no issues. Hopefully ATi/AMD will work on their drivers more and the 3870 will catch up to the 8800GT. You can however pair up two 3870s on the 790FX chipset and they will work in CF at full x16, x16 speed.

Look at this card because it has a better cooler:

So I can crossfire, on a 790FX chipset? Guranteed? As I plan on ordering this thing friday.

And I like that card. :)

Re: New Computer ~ Thoughts?

Yep, and I can tell you that 2x 3870 will yield outstanding performance on the 790FX despite ATi/AMDs shortfalls.
