Prices for GS Service

I received a BB catalog yesterday that had these prices for GS service:

"Data Transfer - Agents will copy and move all of your files, like music, movies, and e-mail, from your old computer to a new one. Does not include transfer of programs or operating systems." .........................$59

"Data Backup" - Know your files are safe, no matter what. Have an Agent save your data files, up to 4.7 gigabytes, to a DVD." ...............................$89

"Advanced Security Setup - Pritect what's yours. An Agent will install antivirus and anti-spyware software, and re-configure your computer for better performance. (Precinct software only)" ........$118

"PC Setup - Avoid the hassel of cables and connections. Have an Agent set up your computer." .................$129

"Wireless Networking - An Agent will install a secure wireless network so you can surf, print and e-mail without wires. Includes netwroking up to 2 PCs and file and print sharing. (Hardware not included.)" .................$159

EDIT: The first 3 are done in BB, the last 2 are in home.

I personally love BB, but do not like the GS! I've heard too many horror stories about them in my area! I wouldn't let them touch a computer of mine with a 10 foot pole. No offense to anyone that may work for them, my area must have some really careless people on the GS.

I think the real question is how much you would charge for this:

Quote:
“Hi. I just bought a new computer for my 9 year old. She says my old P2, Win95 machine is trash even though it still runs AOL just fine. I’ve read enough that I’m scared of identity theft and catching a virus. I think I need protection from spam. And I want my internet to be www.imanidiot.com not this aboutblank thingy. I want to setup a network in my house – although I really don’t fully understand what that is. I do want to print from either computer. How much to do all that?”
I’m sure this isn’t Chevy’s typical customer but it likely is GS’s. I’m guessing that $500 emachines at BB just turned into a $1000 rig.

This looks like a 3 hour field call. Not too tough - as long as the second system is 95B. I would do a wireless solution (since we have a set price including hardware), then bill an additional hour for setting up the workgroup, shares, printers, etc.

So, $199 + $85 = $284 (includes WiFi router and NIC).

My take on the Geek Squad: a crew of 17 year old kids with a script: "If 'x' occurs, try 'y'. If 'y' fails, turn to page 76."

How many of these guys have more than 3 years experience, I find myself wondering. How many were around to see the Commodore Vic 20 or the Timex Sinclair 1000? My unvalidated perception of these kids is that they are just "big into computers". In fact, one of my brochures compares experts with people who are just 'smart with computers'.

I don't mind someone correcting me on this. I don't know much of anything about Geek Squad's internal operations. Maybe all them guys are A+ certified, for what that counts.

I thought with the price of gas going up, it would be hard to compete against the Big Corporate 'Wal-Mart' types. Not really. People can tell an expert from the imposters.

This I do have to agree with... Or, if x fails, just reformat computer... I have seen many computer techs default to automatic format and reinstall windows. I actually went looking for a power supply tester for my computer at a "computer repair" store in town and he was like "You don't need that, probably a virus"... This was when my computer wouldn't stay on past 10-50 seconds.

This I have to disagree with. Not around to see the Commodore or the Timex Sinclair has no affect on the person's ability to repair a computer now adays. I barely remember the Commodore and don't remember the Timex Sinclair at all. However, I'm still good at what I do and people know that. Please do not generalize people based on their age and what they've been around to see.

I apologize. I hate when people do that to me and I should not have generalized like that in this forum. My statements were not at all logical.

Thanks for the apology. And sorry if I came off sounding rude or anything. It just pushed my buttons to see that said in a very generalizing terms.

One of my friends brother just bought a pc from BB. They wanted something like $400 to install firewall, av and spyware programs. I about had a heart attack when I heard that.
