OK, after you have HJT fix all of these and reboot, I would like you to note that I have put an asterisk next to several entries; I would like you to find and delete these programs, then reboot.

You should be clean.

Good luck!

As I mentioned previously, you also want to fix these, your search page has been hijacked.

Well, I did everything you guys said I should, but the programs still aren't responding. The only different thing is that I'm not getting so many popups when I load up my homepage :(

When you were a kid, did you ever play one of those games where you bop something, another one pops up, you bop it, another pops up, going faster and faster?

Well, that's what we have here. I'm tenacious, so I'm willing to look at some more logs, try to chase the beasts down, but...

There is only so much abuse that a system can take, and yours has just been pummeled. I do not think that I have seen a system hit this hard, though some have been close. I don't know if you can ever get your system running the way that it should.

I would encourage you to seriously consider a reformat. At this point, I would also discourage your backing up and re-using much (just your address book and favorites, perhaps).

When you bring the new install up, that will give you the opportunity to start fresh with a good firewall, antivirus, spyware blockers, etc

It's up to you, but I think you're pretty "dead in the water".

With the mess the system was in, it may be time to dust off the distribution CD's and reinstall from scratch. I'd also install a firewall as one of the first steps.

So, I'll get back to you guys in a few days with whats up.....but thanks for trying, I appreciate it alot :D

Good plan! You know, it's a lot easier to work on a machine that you can sit down in front of, hit with a wrench, etc.

Please do let us know if you solve the mysteries (and how you did it) :D :merlin:

Yep, I think most folks have no idea how much more difficult it is to fix things in ASCII from 2,000 miles away! :D

I have VNC on all my client machines so I can "sit at the screen" when I'm fixing things for them, makes it MUCH easier. :)

I've had some interesting problems with Norton Antivirus that may shed a little light on the problem. There was a virus/worm that came out last yesr that would alter the Norton exe files to allow certain programs (normally adware) to slip by undetected. The other more nefarious purpose of the virus/worm was to change Norton to self-destruct after a certain period of time.

I had this happen on my computer and when Norton self-destructed it took half my drive with it. It begins by randomly deleting programs, and dll files, which causes errors like what was noted above. Files not loading, or capable of being repaired. It may also slow up your computer seriously as these damaged files are still taking up memory that could (or should) be allocated elsewhere.

I hate to recommend this but I would go with a different virus protection system.
