Hey every one.
I am trying to recover a crashed hard drive.
I have read many software boxes telling me they could pring my PC back from the dead. So I am asking this to every one here (in the real world) What have you used and how well did it work?
I am looking at Hard drive Mechanic but not sure about it clams.
Any help would be great

It will depend on how bad the hard drive is I belive. I have used spinrite successfully in the past. That is the only one I've gotten to work. It isn't a quick process though. I belive a 1 gig hd took me about 36 hours to fix and get data off.

My hard drive crashes have been from file allocation table or boot sector corruption. Though I have never used a software for recovery I have always (but one time) been able to recover most of my critical stuff by putting the "crashed" hard drive as a slave to a working system and copy files. The one I couldn't fix was a quantum 5 1/4 (bigfoot) that had a fried bearing. Oil had leaked out the top and it even smelled really bad.
