AOL Instant Messenger stops working

I have seen this on several machines at work, and now it has happened to my personal system at home. Basically, AOL Instant Messenger does not work at all anymore. When I click on the icon to start the program, the process aim.exe is started, but the application itself never comes up. Mr. Buddy doesn't appear in the taskbar, and AOL Instant Messenger does not appear in the applications list.

I'm a computer tech that deals with spyware every day, and haven't found a shred of it on my machine using any of my bag of tricks. Neither have I found any signs of a virus. Reinstalling the app, even if I delete the registry keys and install it to a new directory does not work. Even older versions of AIM do not work. I'm running XPTE SP2 with all the latest updates.

I'm at wits end. And I'm forced to connect to AIM through Trillian (which works fine).

Send a message via AIM to Aeuzent Send a message via MSN to Aeuzent Send a message via Yahoo to Aeuzent
Well the quick anwser would be "Screw AIM use Gaim"
Which is usually my anwser for all AIM problems
That goes for Trillian problems too, which is a crappy messenger

As for your problem with AIM aside from a wipe and clean install of the program with the newest version I'd fall back on the good old "AOL makes shoddy products" excuse

Gaim can be found here
