This depends on whether you want to keep application and data files. If so, back them up to a CD or diskettes. The next issue depends on whether you have Win98 or Win98 upgrade. With Win98, wipe the disk clean by formatting it or using a hard-disk cleaning program and then format the drive. Then load Win98. Check staff.washington.edu/jdlarios/autoclave/install.html for a program called "autoclave," which is a freeware linux program written by Professor Larios that will clean any IDE drive. You download his software, create a linux boot disk, insert it in the diskette drive and start the computer. The instructions are included with the download. Follow the directions carefully. Then use a Win98 boot disk to create partitions using fdisk and then format the drive. If you don't have one or don't know how to create one, buy it on Ebay. Go to www.fdisk.com to learn how to use fdisk, then reboot to an A:> prompt and type "format C:". Press enter and follow the prompts. When complete, load Win98. If you have Win98 upgrade, find someone with Win 3.1 or Win95 and load it. Then immediately load Win98 upgrade, which requires an earlier version of Windows to be installed in order to load properly. Or you could just buy more memory.
