I've used MS Access to create customer databases. When I worked for the police department we also used Access to maintain records on burglaries.

Depnding on the size of the company you can do everything from write your own access to something like Microsoft Dynamics which is SQL based.

What exactly are you looking for? A customer management database? customer support database? ticket tracking database? If you are not familar with SQL, I would probably avoid any SQL based database. Even MS access would become difficult to manage as your business grows. There are plenty of applications that have a database running the background that might be better for your needs. Check out:

http://www.salesforce.com - on-demand customer relationship management
http://www.bugzilla.com - issue/bug tracking for small teams
