If you want to make a backup of a game that you own, you need to have the original CD which contains the installation files. Simply copying the installed game files from your hard drive onto a CD won't necessarily work.

The CD Key is a serial number you type in to prove you purchased the game. You need to find the misplaced CD... without it you can't legally run the game.
