LAG/FPS problems ????

I have 1 gig ram
Aol gold ( like 576 kbs)
Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz

I recently bought a GeForce 7800 GS (overclocked) for AGP to make games run and so i could play games like FeAR and Quake 4 ( i previously had nvidia geforce fx 5500) and recently i have been experienced problems with sudden and now getting more frequent periods of increased ping and decreased FPS .... it surely can't be the Graphics card as it decent ( Or at least i hope so seen as it cost me like 190 quid ) anyway does anyone know what the problem could it be an internet speed problem coz this happens when my ping fluctuates.

I can tell you right now that AOL is NOT what you want if you plan to do some serious online gaming.

Can you tell us a bit about your PSU? The step up to a 7800GS from a 5500FX is huge to say the least and while your PSU may have been adequate for the 5500, it may not have enough to run the 7800 and the rest of your system very smoothly.

Take the side off your case, and you will see the PSU - it's the box-like device that the power cable plugs into from the outside. There should be a few stickers/panels on it. If you can get us the info on those, we'd be able to tell if it may be a problem or not.

The main things you're looking for are a wattage value (normally expressed as 450W or 560W or suchlike) and the amperage values for the different rails (normally expressed as +12V / 18A). Also, the brand name of the PSU would be good (and if you can see one, a model number of it would let us narrow the specs down to the exact model you have).

I pin the blame on AOL mainly because you mention it happening when the ping fluctuates.

Well i just tried CoD 2 Singleplayer and it is happening on that as well fps is dropping to 10... i did download a patch which solved the problem but it is doing it again now so i don't think it is an internet problem.

Well could it be a Heat problem? Because I was talking to someone else and I explained that it takes a little while for it to happen the first time but after that it becomes more frequent....and as I only have 1 fan in graphics card and one other fan in side so could heat be my problem?

Check your system's power requirements here

Download Everest Free Edition, go to Computer > Sensor and note the temperatures and voltage values. Also, open up your case and copy down the info from the label on the Power Supply Unit. Post back with this info and your full system specs.

Overclocking your graphics card will contribute to heat build-up and put more of a strain on the PSU. Try setting it back to its default settings.

You need more than just the one side fan. Another one at the front of your case would be helpful, it should be placed low down and pulling cool air in. More importantly you need one at the back, placed near the top and blowing hot air out.

Have you tried reapplying some thermal paste to your CPU? Instructions

Recently my pc broke down and needed fixing .... various things were wrong .... Hard drive was replaced and a stick of RAM was faulty. But while it was being fixed i found out that the PSU was like 300W and was told by people fixing it that 300W isn't enough to run the card i had .. so i got it updated and it is now a 500W, i also got 512 RAM put in.I haven't yet had the chance to play any games yet but i hope the problem is gone.

I'm with e. I still think it's AOL, single player or multiplayer. AOL is nasty and loads a ton of crap on your system. When you're playing single player, AOL broadband is still connected and still doing stuff in the background. My opinion if you can: lose AOL.
