i cant play half life 2 after i install it

well back when i installed HL2 and steam ( i uninstalled both of them once i started having games freezin up, probably cus of some counter strike mods i downloaded

,thats the last time i download mods) i installed half life 2 and got a steam account but i couldnt play half life 2

please help

this isnt as urgent as my recent problem ( see-PLEASE HELP!, BF2 and other games freeze a few seconds after they reach main menu!) someone please get back to me as soon as possible for this problem

With how Steam games work, none of them are playable right from the box. I find it stupid really, but thats what they chose to do.
Once you install Steam and HL2, you have to let Steam update all the HL2 files, and what ever else Steam does to it that lets you play the game. An installed game usualy shows up as about 70% complete, with the last 30% or so needing to be downloaded via Steam to configure the game.
This means you cant install and play a game, you have to connect, register, download updates, and then you can play single player...

Had this problem myself when I had no internet for a few months, drove me mad I couldnt play the game right out the box without having internet.
