could use a helping hand - WOW problems

Hi, for the past few days (or since the patch im not 100% sure if thats the reason) while playing the game the sound loops for about 0.5sec of whatever the game sound currently is and goes over and over and my screen looks like this:

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...5/P9250003.jpg

If i try to move this image doesnt change so i have no control whatsoever. after about 20seconds this image appears:

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...5/P9260004.jpg

I am not really a whizz with computers but I have tried to fix this using advice I have found from google searches/forums. firstly I was advised to turn off auto reboot so I could read this blue screen of death (even if it is all weird looking and not standard text) however when I did this I stay on screenshot one indefinatly and never reach the blue screen. I checked problem logs and found out it might a failure on the video cards side, I updated all the drivers but it still keeps happening. I have run virus checks also and nothing is found. I also took out my video card and cleaned it (it was pretty dusty) but no luck there.

This only happens when playing wow and after 5 hours of web surfing not a single problem, it also seems to happen more frequently in times where alot is going on or in certain area of the world, I don't have any other games on my computer so cant see if this problem is specific to wow.

any help with this matter would be really appreciated and if you need to know any information that somebody less computer savvy wouldnt know could you please explain how to find the relevent information.

(p.s the video card I have is Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT, operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit)

Thanks in advance!

Re: could use a helping hand - WOW problems

Hi and welcome to TSF,
Could you please post your full system specs (including your Power Supply). RAM, CPU, Motherboard, PSU ect.

Also could you please post your idle and in-game temperatures.

A good program to use for both of the above is Everest which can be downloaded from my signature.

Thanks,
Floop12444

Hello.

In addition to what floop said. Could you please post your Graphics card driver version. To find it:

Start -> Control panel -> Nvidia Control panel -> Help -> System information.

Re: could use a helping hand - WOW problems

Thanks for responsding guys, I included screen shots of my system specs and a photograph of my reciept from dell listing what I got. I hope this is what you need:

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh34/tkt05/page3.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh34/tkt05/page4.jpg

My power supply says 375 watts on the sticker on the side.

Idle temp: 34 C (93 F)
In-game temp: 35 c (95 F)

Driver version: 190.62

I read my video card might be overheating and downloaded something called 'rivatuner' to manually set the fan speed. I turned it up to the recommended speed (55% in this case) but still had the same issue.

Thanks in advance!

Simple, your Power supply is too weak to power your system, i recommend this:
Corsair 650W
Thanks.

Re: could use a helping hand - WOW problems

ok thanks for the info, just for curiosities sake why has it been ok for the past year but now it is suddenly playing up? Also is the power supply just to weak to support the video card alone, would it be better to buy a new video card rather than power supply or would that not help?

Weak Power Supplies deterioate after time, and when they get too weak to supply sufficient power to the GPU, games start to crash. I can assure you and almost guarantee that if you get a new Power Supply (the on i mentioned in prev. post) your game will work perfectly as it did before.
Thanks.

Can you open the side of your case and tell me what the PSU is?

Re: could use a helping hand - WOW problems

Hello,

Most likely, since this problem just started happening, it is the PSU, as floop mentioned above. A 350w is very low for gaming, and your video card requires at least a minimum of 400w, as mentioned here http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8800gt_faq.html, Corsair is a great brand, i use a 1000w myself, but a 650w would be perfect for you.

However, make sure you update your drivers, click on the Nvidia link in my signature and look up your graphic card and download the latest and greatest drivers, sometimes this can cause the issue, which is very commmon.

Also if buying a new PSU and updating the drivers is not the problem, it could be the graphic card going out.

So 3 solutions here:
1) Update Drivers
2) Swap PSU's
3) Swap Graphic Card's
