Hey i've been getting really bad ping spikes in CS:S in some servers. Mostly ones with more than 20 players in it. I have set my cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate accordingly to where my choke is always lower than 10 and there is no loss. I usually have a ping in the 80's and latency in the 40's but occassionally and quite randomly i get spikes in ping over 400 and latency over 200. But the choke is still less than 10 and still no loss.
I run on vista home premium with a wireless network adapter....can anyone offer any suggestions!? THANKS!! |

Re: Ping Spikes in CS:S on wireless connection....help?
Hello, welcome to TSF.
Unfortunately, wireless networks are not good for playing games on, they tend to have lag spikes like the ones you experience. Can you connect to the internet via a cable to see if that stops the lag spikes?

Re: Ping Spikes in CS:S on wireless connection....help?
I could try but the chances of that happening are very slim....like 10%
i have lowered my cmdrate to 12 and my updaterate to 9 and my rate to 10000.....the spikes have settled but in massive servers i still tend to lock up at parts for a few moments. i would like to solve this while keeping wireless if possible. Thanks for the reply |

Well that's the downfall of wireless networks I'm afraid, you're going to get lag spikes like that. Do you use a router? if you do, you can try moving the router closer to your computer or vice versa.

Re: Ping Spikes in CS:S on wireless connection....help?
I have posted my thoughts I wireless and gaming before, it's a bad idea due to latency, interference, and additional packet overhead.
If you cannot run a cable you might try some of the following to help your performance. 1. Configure your router and desktop adapter to run in Wireless G mode only. This eliminates some of the packet overhead that mixed mode requires. 2. Change your router and desktop adapter to another less common channel. Don't use 1, 6, or 11 as they are most common. 3. Get some high gain antenna's for your router and desktop adapter. See the link below for Microsofts take on improving your wifi connections. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/wirelesstips.aspx Again... just run the cable if you can. No matter what you do, you will have higher latency and slower throughput on wireless than a copper cable connection.
