Short freezes every few seconds

When playing Aion, I get short .5-2s long freezes every 20-30 seconds of gameplay. They are complete freezes (not rubberbanding, pre-rendered things moving while other do not, etc, complete freezes). Following each freeze, the next half a minute or so runs perfectly smooth. I've had this issue in Warhammer, but it was less noticeable because that game has very laggy servers.

First I figured driver issue, installed new ones, didn't help.
Went for a reinstall of the game, didn't help.
Tried my girlfriends laptop on my Ethernet cable, runs fine, so it's not my network.
Measured temperatures during gameplay CPU at full load doesn't exceed 40C, gpu doesn't exceed 55C. (from rivatuner/Rightmark readouts)
Underclocked GPU with rivatuner, didn't help.
Spammed /ping in game over and over while autorunning in a straight line, high pings DO correspond with freezes

Thinking it might be hard drive somehow, or perhaps my computer's network setup (firewall maybe?). Other games run fine, Guild Wars, Warcraft III, Supreme Commander. 3DMark05 benchmarks run great, rarely under 30FPS with no stutter. Also, no crashes, CTDs, BSoDs, just these short freezes.

Any ideas?

System Specs:
AMD 4600+ 64 X2
MSI MS-7388
XFX geforce 8800 GTS 320mb
4 gigs corsair DDR2
Seagate 7200 RPM 320gb
Antec TruePower Trio 650w

Re: Short freezes every few seconds

Hi and welcome to TSF.
I am not sure...but I had this similar issue with cod4 and a certain antivirus. Whats your AV, it could be the RT scanning files.

run that in IE and post back when done.

Re: Short freezes every few seconds

I'm using Kaspersky, which is generally pretty non-invasive. I'll try running with it turned off when I finally get to the front of the server queue....

That link you gave me told I well exceed requirements, 9000 3D-marks over the recommended (it's over 9000!). I know it's not a top-of-the-line PC, but it was 2 years ago, so it should still run Aion great (Aion is about a year old in Korea).

Is there any reason I could be losing packets, or have packets being delayed?

Update: Turning off Kaspersky fixed the freezes for now. Now I need to figure out how to make them both run and behave.

I don't trust Kaspersky, that's just me, I'm using Avast! for more than 4 years now, it's free antivirus and my PC is in good condition,
you can also use NOD32 is a strong AV (payed)

Re: Short freezes every few seconds

I was actually going to recommend avast. I don't know if I can say kaspersky is a bad av, I think it beats mcafee by a longshot . Anyways if it is totally fixed by disabling your RT then there isn't much you can do, reason why I suggest avast is because it uses less ram and personal experience. Example I use to have CA(had really fast Spyware scanner...)but it's AV was a ram hog. Disabling the RT helped "sooth" some of the lag in cod4 except airstrikes, however once I switch to avast I had rt on and no lag .

Re: Short freezes every few seconds

of course Kaspersky is better than Mcafee
Mcafee, norton Bit defender, Microsoft 1 Care etc... all junk!

final thing to say:
if you want a free AV get Avast
if you want to pay for AV get NOD32

Re: Short freezes every few seconds

I use AV and like it.. not a resource hog , does not take control of my box.
Load times on certain servers can cause this also.
