Cod4 lag... any ideas?

So i recently put togather a system that should totally destroy cod4. The first level played fine, but now when i get to levels that are in cities, with alot of smoke and people shooting at me, it drops down to around 40fps or so, even with everything turned down. Ive tried to lower the resolution from what im using (1920x1080) and it still lags. World of warcraft plays flawlessly with everything turned up, As does crysis, but with everything on medium. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Windows XP (64-Bit)
Intel i7 920 (Oced to 3.3)
Asus P6T mobo
6 Gigs of ram
Radeon HD 4890

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

Have you downloaded the latest drivers for your GPU? Also have you patched the game to its latest version?

Drivers: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

Patchs: http://www.gamershell.com/pc/call_of...odern_warfare/

EDIT: You should be able to play Crysis on high (Turn off AA though, it kills FPS) and I would also get the latest patch for that as well.

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

Im actually at work right now. My psu is a Corsair 650TX,(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005) i dont know the volts offhand, and i havent checked the temps yet, considering its not oced, didnt think it would be a problem. I'll be sure to check it when i get home, which should be in a few hours and post up a reply.

Note: When i first put the system togather, i was having a problem with the card. When i would turn it on, it wouldnt post at all, and i would get 1 long beep, and 3 short, which is a graphics error. The GPU fan would also spin at 100%.Asus tech support told me that chances are it was my card not liking my PSU, So i went and got another PSU, and had the same problem. It eventually fixed its self, after i installed a 64bit version of XP. (couldnt get windows 7 to work at all for some reason)

Figured id fill you in with the problems ive had with this setup.

Edit: I just realized i havent updated direct X.. Im guessing that could play a big factor.

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

You say your setup runs flawlessly on World of warcraft but don’t let the games graphics deceive you, it can be a very demanding game.

That PSU is more than enough for your setup(Assuming you only have 1 or 2 HDD and DVD drives) but so far it does sound like a driver issue (Make sure you use a program such as Driver Sweeper once you have uninstalled your current driver before installing the new one). If you have the latest ATI driver I would try to use a previous version to see if that would help.

EDIT: I wouldn’t think that DirectX would play a major part as 90% of games ask you to install DirectX whether you have it or not. If you never saw directx being installed while Crysis or COD 4 was being installed then it just might well be your problem.

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

I only have 1 HD and 1 Dvd-RW. I've only the newest drivers installed on this system. I'll update direct X when i get home and post an update.

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

K so ive installed the new direct X, patched cod4 with the latest patch, and its STILL running like crap. Crysis runs perfect with everything all the way on high @ 1920x1080. Im beginning to think its my game =/

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

Why are you complaining about 40FPS? anything below 25FPS will show as lag and 30FPS and above is perfectly acceptable. The game isn't lagging is it?

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

Well when the game goes from 120fps to 40fps, theres alot of lag. You can feel it slow down hardcore. Its definatly to bad to enjoy. Reguardless, with the rig i have, there should be absolutly no lag, all i want is playability.

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

Well if you put on V-Sync it will show the max FPS your monitor can handle keeping it at a steady pace. I can see how going from 120FPS to 40FPS would be a bit wonky but it shouldn't really lag.

Have fun at work!

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

So i uploaded a video to youtube, waiting for it to be processed, not sure how long that takes considering its my first one ive ever loaded. I used fraps and set the cap to 60 (as high as it goes i guess). In the video, it would stick at 60, then go below even whats normal for my low (around 35ish, guessing because fraps was running).

I just watched a video of someone with 512mb of ram, and a 9600gt playing this game perfectly... i think im gonna puke =/

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

o.o i played that game with x1950 pro on some high setting and got better FPS =.=

did u try playing at a slightly lower setting? I know that your computers a beast, but if you still lag a lower settings then we know that its a software problem. btw if you're running like 32x AA then its definitely going to lag. go to CCC and see if you have any unneccessary stuff turned on.

BTW that really sounds like a problem with post processing and Flip queue size or max frames to render ahead, try different settings with that and see if it helps

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

Try running the CPU at stock settings. OC'ing can cause problems.

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

just a question how long did you have the CPU OCed for?

well for those settings, just search up Ati Tray tools, install and run in the "auto balanced" profile.

Right click on the diamond icon thing beside the clock, go to 3D profiles and select auto balanced. Do it again just in case :D

Re: Cod4 lag... any ideas?

I've basically narrowed it down to Water Detail, When i have it on normal, it lags like hell, even when there is no water in the picture.. Everything is all the way up, other than AA and Water detail, and it perfectly fluid... should i beable to run this with AA and water detail? WD tends to make it lag even with no water..
