blue screen when playing games

hey, i just got a new computer, im running Windows XP Home SP3, my specs are

intel pentium 4
asus p5gd1 motherboard
512mb ram
radeon 7000

Every time i play a game, about 15 minutes into the game or so, i get a blue screen that says Kernel Data Inpage Error, mentions atapi.sys and says something about physical memory dump and i cant go anywhere but restart my computer.
Any advice??

Re: blue screen when playing games

Hi BR4N and welcome to TSF,

Kernel Data Inpage Error seems to be related to a HDD that is connected using an IDE (40-pin ribbon cable) in which the HDD is either set to Slave and/or the HDD is connected to the slave plug on the ribbon cable itself when you only have 1 HDD in your system.

First check that the HDD is connected to the first or top connection on the ribbon cable and that the jumper settings have been set to Master or Cable select.

If you have a DVD burner sharing the same cable then you need to do the opposite. The DVD drive must be set as Master and connected to the ribbon cable first, then your HDD must be set to slave and connected to the second plug on the ribbon cable.
