how do i run freespace2 scp without the original game?

i know its posible. ive done it in the past and it is also mentioned in places like forums and presentations of scp in magazines. scp was in a magazine's dvd. i lost it and i decided to download it via the homepage's installer. it has finished(after several ours) but each time i try to run it from any of the launcers i get an error that says that a web cursor bitmap wasnt found because of three reasons. all three are related to the original game's installation.

only the launcer "fs2_open_3_6_10" seems abit diffrent. after the bitmap error i get an error that says that the animation cursor for the mpouse pointer could not be loaded. after i press ok i see the freespace 2 intro if either interupting it or let it finish has no diffrence. i get a messenge that complains about too many fonts and advises me to see john(woot) or change MAX_FONTS in graphics\font.h. after i press ok again i get another error this one is about inability to load in choosepilot-m! after i press ok(last one) i get a black screen that i must press ctrl+esc and then close it via the task(en) manager.

thats all. or atleast i think so.
