[SOLVED] FPS drops then crash in TF2

Ok, so the first week I had this computer, TF2 ran just perfectly and never lost any FPS. Now, it will work perfectly (FPS capped at 67) for about 10 minutes, then my FPS will drop into the 40s, then the 30s, then the 20s, and then it crashes. It happens EVERY time. The whole thing from from FPS drop to the crash takes ~30 minutes.

Its not my CPU overheating

Any ideas?

Computer specs:
AMD Phenom 2 4x 955 @3.2GHz
XFX ATI radeon 4850
4 GB G.Skill DDR2 RAM
Antec 650W PSU

Re: FPS drops then crash in TF2

Is TF2 the only game you are having this problem?

Your PSU may not be high enough for your system. A PSU like the Corsair 750TX-750W should run smoothly on your system. (Alt link here.)

Either the PSU, like Jason said, or overheating.

You can use Speedfan in my signature, download it and post the temps.

Re: FPS drops then crash in TF2

I dont really play any games other than TF2, but I guess I'll give that a shot. Speedfan says the CPU is staying at about 46-47C. Graphics card isn't going above 50. I went to a PSU calculator website (http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp) and it says my PSU is more then powerful enough to run everything.

Hello flaemfreak77,

Make sure your ATI graphic drivers are up to date, you can download them by clicking "ATI Drivers" in my signature.

Also, update your DirectX, to do that, click on "DirectX" in my signature and make sure both of those are updated.

What is your PSU Brand and Wattage.

You should never use PSU calcs to determine what size PSU you need. - They ALWAYS underestimate the power you actually need.

When you use a PSU calculator you need to add to things to the total. Add 30% for capacitor aging and 20% for safety, for a total of 50% more.

Are these the temps while playing TF2 or when your PC is doing nothing?

It says in the first post, heres the link though:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371021

My temps while playing are around 49 for the CPU and 50 for the graphics card. I have also updated my Graphics drivers and I have updated Directx. I haven't tested it much since then, but it seems like the problem is still there.

Then that's not too high. Do you close off all other programs when you play? Also, disable real-time scanning from your anti-virus when you play, as that may slow the computer down.

I usually dont run anything in the background when I play TF2, except for occasionally Windows media player or Firefox. I'm probably gonna change my anti virus program, because my current one is just a trial. I can't figure out if its doing real-time scanning or not though. One thing that my be notable is that my friend has an identical computer except for the antivirus, and his TF2 runs fine. (until his Graphics card crashes that is :P)

Re: FPS drops then crash in TF2

Could updating my BIOS do anything for it? normally I wouldn't think it would, but It seems alot of people have prblems with the new phenom2 quads and this board, which are fixed by updating the BIOS. My board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131381

EDIT: Nope, I flashed the BIOS and it still happened. *accidental triple post* So yeah, at this point the only thing I can think of doing is re-installing Vista.

What type of Anti-Virus are you using?
You can try Avast Home Edition which is free. Ive had no problems with it.

Re: FPS drops then crash in TF2

I was using norton, now Im using Mcafee. My friend plays TF2 fine with mcafee. I also heard that re-installing Steam might fix it, so Im giving that a shot now.

I use McAfee now, but I wouldn't really recommend it either. Once your subscription is over, I recommend getting one like Avast or Avira.

Re: FPS drops then crash in TF2

Well, I get it for free from Comcast, so its no big deal if I want to switch :P And I'm cautiously optimistic, but I *think* that un-installing and re-installing Steam fixed it. I've played a bit since I did it, and it has yet to have the drop. I haven't had any super long sessions yet though, so it still needs to be tested.

Once you've tested it, if it still works fine, mark the thread as solved and let us know.

Good luck. Hope it goes well. =)
