[SOLVED] New PC help!

I just received my new PC from overclockers.co.uk today

i7 920 @ 3.8ghz
6gb DDR3 @ 1600mhz
Geforce 295
1tb Hard Drive
650watt SLI power
Vista Premium 64

My previous pc to this was a (non overclocked) Q6600, 4gb DDR2 @800mhz and a Geforce 280, Windows XP

The promblem is, I just tested it out on Crysis Warhead & Stalker Clear Sky and the games only run marginally better than my old machine. I had Crysis run in DX10 on enhthusiast with 4x AA and I was getting about 10-25 fps. If I run it in DX9 it helps but it should still run a lot faster than this shouldn't it?
I updated the drivers on the graphics card so it's not that. Are these specs really not enough to play these kind of games on max. On the reviews for the Geforce 295 alone, it was getting 40fps more than the 280 on crysis which is why I think there may be something else wrong with the machine.

Any feedback would be hugely appreciated.

Re: New PC help!

hello and welcome to TSF
could you please post your PSU model?
anyway 650W won't be able to power a beast like Geforce 295 + the i7 920

you need at least a 850W PSU like this:
Corsair 850W, 70A under +12V
140$, 110$ after rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=Corsair%20850

Hi, thank you both for your quick responses.

The PSU is a Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply

The full specs are here

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=FS-065-OE

But I added the HAF 932 case with a GTX 295

Re: New PC help!

Corsair are great PSUs indeed but the GTX 295 is a power hungry card and I don't know if 650 W is enough as this card has 2 cores
especially that the CPU is overclocked
did you try a game other than Crysis?
also be sure to get the latest Nvidia drivers from my sig

Well, i just tried ARMA 2 and that ran pretty well on highest settings with medium anti aliasing but Crysis Warhead & Stalker Clear Sky were very sluggish. Crysis was almost unplayable on DX10. I just thought that specs like that would kick the crap out of any game and, like i said, the reviews for the 295 said that it got over 20 more fps on crysis than the 280

This benchmark test stated he was getting over 50fps in Cysis on Vista

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/170...ed/index8.html

I guess i was just expecting a PC that costs £1320 ($2168) to max out all games currently available.

Thank you for your help though. I'll call the company i bought it from in the morning and see what they have to say.

Re: New PC help!

you should max out all your games
the maker of the tweakerguides.com maxed out Crysis using a GTX 285
http://www.tweakguides.com/Hardcon09_1.html
check the PSU he chose it's definitely higher than 650 W and he got a GTX285 so what do you say about a GTX295 it definitely needs a higher one
so there is a problem with your hardware or maybe with some drivers
did you install Windows or was it already installed?
try to remove 1 stick of ram and keep the others (4gb)
also please specify your Motherboard model

Yeah i'll definately give them a ring in the morning and speak to them about getting a bigger PSU. The motherboard is a Gigabyte EX58-UD5.

Re: New PC help!

Called the technical support line this morning and when I told him they put in a 650w psu he burst out laughing. He said it should have at least an 800w so mystery solved. Thank you both for your help, you were spot on.

Will do man

Cheeky buggers want me to arrange for a company to pick it up and send it back to them. Just sent them a complaint email. I could have sworn that a 'collect and return' warranty means they collect it and return it.
