Devil May Cry 3 - some buttons dont work

so i have a legit copy of devil may cry 3: special edition for the PC (my friend didnt want it, so i took it). Anyway, i've updated to the 1.3 patch, and when i run the game, i get a nasty little addition (or subtraction) to my gameplay:

My melee and shoot buttons don't work. I don't mean that the gamepad's buttons don't work, and i don't mean that the game does not recognize certain keys. I can press the melee button in the menu and "go back," but when i press the melee button in game, dante stands there and practically welcomes the scythes to the chest.

i have changed melee and shoot to multiple different buttons and keyboard keys, but this is always the case. Can anyone help?
