[SOLVED] New games crash computer
Hey, I'm new to the forums and I have a problem. I just built a brand-spankin new computer to play games, however, whenever I play anything system intensive, it locks up. Starcraft plays fine and I can play left for dead for hours but UT3 and warhammer online lock up in a few minutes. My system runs pretty cool, so i dont think its over heating.
So...What do you guys think? System specs Power supply - cooler master 500 watts 12v1 16a Mother board gigabyte GA-EP45-UDLR socket775/PCI-E2.0X16/PCI-ex1/ATX CPU intel core duo 3.16ghz Pentium III xeon Ram corsair with 2 2g sticks. Video card ATI radeon HD 4850 OS XP pro P.S - i didn't post my ram info because I didn't know how to answer. I'm a noob. Last edited by moomintroll; 07-01-2009 at 03:42 PM. |

Re: New games crash computer
First of all, Welcome to the forums
![]() Did the power supply come with the case? Unreal Tourment 3 and Warhammer online sound like they need more system resources than l4d and starcraft. I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like you need a better power supply. What is happening is that your parts need to run harder for the games to run, but they need the energy from the power supply and the power supply cannot support to give the hardware the energy it needs so it crashes to prevent damage. When you crash do you get the blue screen of death? |

Re: New games crash computer
The Coolermaster 500W ($30-40US) is not a very good PSU. It is only 70% efficient and provides approx 28A over the two +12V lines. Not suitable for a high-end card like the HD4850. Good quality PSUs that would be considered suitable for the 4850 are 80-90% efficient, have over 50A/+12V and cost about $90US.
Make a note of the temperatures and voltages in BIOS, then reboot and run SpeedFan. Leave it running on the desktop and play a fullscreen game for a few minutes. Alt-tab out of the game and take a screenshot of the temps/volts. Post back with the BIOS and SpeedFan readings so we can compare the idle and stressed performance. If there is a problem with the PSU or it is being pushed too hard by the computer, the temperatures will be high and the +12V output will be outside the safe range of 11.4-12.6V

Re: New games crash computer
We haven't confirmed that there was a problem with your original PSU yet. That's why I asked for the SpeedFan and BIOS readings.
The new 700W PSU with 50A/+12V should prevent future PSU-related problems, and is a good investment, but the old PSU doesn't necessarily have anything to do with your current problem.

Re: New games crash computer
Hello moomintroll
,This sounds to me like a addressing/routing problem with your motherboard. Have you updated the MotherBoard drivers or the BIOS to the latest that is available from Gigabyte? They should have a package that will install the newest SMBUS, USB, etc, etc controllers and drivers.... These will have a better routing/addressing solution for your other hardware. Sven2157 |

Re: New games crash computer
Well, If its a mother board problem, it makes a whole lot of sense. Not only do the back USBs need to be reinstalled everytime i turn on my computer, it also doesnt recognize my front and back speakers. It does however work with my sub. the sound is a new problem but the usbs have always been that way
