Counter Strike Source Lagging
Hi, About three months ago I reinstalled CS:S after having my account hacked. It all worked fine for a few months however recently I have been encountering some lagging issues. Every once and a while my frame rate will drop to between 10-20 fps when it is usually at 60fps when stuffs is happening and 100+fps when nothing is happening. Eventually it will go back up. As I have my computer on longer the frequency of these lag spikes will increase and last longer. During these lag spikes my CPU being used is around 100%.
My system specs are, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Proccessing 5000+ 2.61 GHz, 2GB of RAM I constantly Defrag my system and run several maintenance programs and have anti-virus running 24/7. Not sure what else to say, I'm looking forward to your replies. Thanks, Queepo |

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Having an anti-virus running 24/7 could be the cause of your problems.
Next time you experience the issue, check to see if the anti-virus program is running a scan. Other than that, follow the steps located here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/gaming-forum/pc-gaming-support/120411-important-please-follow-these-steps-before-posting.html Keep us posted on how it goes.

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Hi Queepo, and welcome to TSF.
If nothing in the link Lord Sirian provided helps, please click on "Posting System Specs" in my signature, and follow the instructions to post your full specs for us. Then download Everest and SensorsView (both in my sig), and use them to record your temperatures and voltages (located under Computer -> Sensor in Everest). We will need to see 4 sets of numbers, 2 from each program: +3.3V +5V +12V CPU Temp GPU Temp Any other temps Record first when the computer has just been started, and then record again after 10 - 15 minutes in CS:S (or when the lag starts happening). Do you have any problems with any other games? If so, which ones and what problems (they may be related)? Of course, follow the steps in that other thread first, as something there may solve it.

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Hi,
I used a guide on this site to adjust some of my PC settings including programs and processes that launch on start up. After that i played for a few hours without lag, more than i have been able to get. So far as I can tell my problem has been solved but i previously ran some clean up tools that also did this. I am not sure if my problem is solved or not but if it does come back I will be sure to post my specs using your help and ask for help once again. Thanks everyone for your very helpful response and I hope I don't have to ask for your help again. Queepo |

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Sorry to hear that the lag has returned, could you please download Everest (if you have not already done so), located here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html and SensorsView (if you have not already done so), located here: http://www.stvsoft.com/SensorsViewPro21Setup.exe and use them to find your PSU voltages which are located in *Computer -> Sensor (in Everest)* and post them here. Include: +3.3V +5V +12V Your voltages are very important and we need to know what they are.

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Ok, your voltages are all fine, and it shouldn't be an overheating problem as your temperatures are fine too. How big is your PSU?

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
On second thought, your +5V and +12V are both over what they should be. Not much over, but enough to potentially be a problem.
I don't think the lag is related to the voltages though, but you should get a new PSU anyway. Information on PSU's can be found here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/ram-power-supply-support/192217-power-supply-information-selection.html You should choose something from the Power Desktop Computer class. Aside from that, what is the wattage on your current PSU?

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Also, your hard drives are too hot at 47C and 48C. They should be about 30C. This could be due to the out-of-range +12V output or poor air circulation in the case.

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
I'm stumped. I can't seem to figure out whats causing the lag. I've tried everything, i'm considering a new processor but other than that I have absolutely no idea what to do....

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Check in Event Viewer or Task Manager to see what processes are using the CPU when the game is lagging.
Clean any dust out of your case with a can of compressed air and make sure all the fans are spinning, then check the temperatures and voltages again. Have you installed the AMD Dual Core Optimizer? Have you changed any of the advanced settings in the nvidia control panel from default? Do any of the settings conflict with the graphics options in Counter Strike?

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
I have change a few settings using a guide to fix driver issues with games and again that seemed to fix the problem but it only came back not as bad but I still havnt played enough for it to fully come back, if it's going to. I'm just so confused my fps is 150+ untill the lag spikes and then my CPU is being spent on simple but needed processes like explorer.exe and and system.exe etc. I'm not sure where to find my PSU voltage.

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Thanks Koala,
I am cleaning out my case tonight with a vacuum and some compressed air. I have installed th AMD Dual core optimizer and I'm pretty sure it's running properly as it is set to run every time I start my computer. I should't be seeing any menus or anything like that should I? Also this problem affects all games using HL2.exe or the Source Engine I have been able to run Sims 3 and Empire Total War without any problems. I am checking forums to see if Valve has any kind of fix for this. Thanks |

Re: Counter Strike Source Lagging
Soe games really need the MAD dual Core optimizer and others not so much. It really depends on what game engine is used and how the game uses the CPU.
Do not try to use the vacuum inside of the case but just use it to suck up the dust you spray with the can of compressed air. You do not want to send a static charge trough the vacuum cleaner on to sensitive computer components. |
