age of empires 2 +vista= not working

ok i purchased the age of empires 2 cd and the conqurers expantion way back in the day after it first came out and installed it on my windows xp desktop. now some 5 years later i decide i want to install it on my vista home premium hp pavilion dv2700 notebook pc but i cant find the cd so i decided to copy over the files for the game via flashdrive and the game tranfers perfectly but of course i need a cd well i thought that if i downloaded the 1.0c patch and follow the directions it would work but no, even using the patch inside the game when you click single player game it still says i need a cd. if you know of any ideas for me please tell me i think its just vista because the game works fine on my xp desktop after i installed the same 1.0c patch.

I think you're going to need the CD. It could just be Vista, but it is more likely to be because you didn't actually install the game.

Hi iapilchild and welcome to TSF,

You will require the CD to play the game, also copying over the files can not guaranty the game will play as the game was installed on a different system. When a game installs it creates registry entries. These entries can either store game information for the OS for the game to run properly or saves core game settings.
You need to either find the CD or buy the game again.

thank you all i will either get a new copy or suffer without. anyway on a side note if anyone knows of a location similar to the old msn zone where u can play aoe2 for free with others please post other than that i feel that i am satisfied with my results once again thank you.
