Angry Video Memory BS

I have a Gateway FX series laptop with an intel core 2 duo CPU at 2.27 gghz, 4 gigs ram, 64 bIt OS, and vista SP1 with a GeForce 9800 gts 1GB graphics card. This laptop is pretty legit and can play games such as Crysis smooth as butter. However, whenever i try to play in particular Half Life 1 or Red Faction 1 it gives me the error that at least 8mb of video memory is required to play. I think it maybe might have to do with the L3 or L2 cache. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi moniJ15, Half-Life 1 will have trouble playing on a 64-bit system, as it can not read the address system the 64-bit OS uses for memory allocation on the RAM. Just make sure you have the latest update for the game.

Or you can buy it off of Steam for about $5, They have modified the exe and some dlls to work properly with 64-bit systems

Re: Video Memory BS

Microsoft do not supply free upgrades/downgrades or different versions of their software (32 or 64-bit).
There are other OS's that are free but again you will run into more problems as none of them have been coded for gaming (or have very little support) and require some knowledge about command line functions.
Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/) is a free OS that comes in 32 and 64bit. It requires two partitions to install to (1 partition for swapfile location).
And to get most the games working you will need to install Wine (http://www.winehq.org/) and the latest 3rd party drivers for your graphics card (both ATI and Nvidia have internal links to 3rd party drivers), to set it up on Ubuntu the Wine website is easy to understand and shows you how.
Any trouble dont hesitate to start a thread in here. http://www.techsupportforum.com/alte...ating-systems/

Or simple enough buy the game package off steam for $14.99 US
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/40/ as i have no guaranty that HL1 will work on Ubuntu.

Re: Video Memory BS

As far as im aware, modifying the EXE and/or dll files without the Authors (Valve) permission is against copyright laws and the EULA they provide with the game.

Re: Video Memory BS

Not that im aware of, its the game that has the problem not the OS. You might as well spend the small amount of money and get the package. Ive got all the HL1 spin-offs they are pretty good.

Re: Video Memory BS

Are there like any third party or fan created patches or something that will update HL past the 1.0.0.0 update?
