Like if I add the lines:
74.125.45.100 www.runescape.com
74.125.45.100 runescape.com
74.125.45.100 runescape

Anytime I try to go to runescape, it will re-direct me to google. Even when I click that link that Zealex provided.

Probably not the case, but just check out that file, open it in notepad or something. Don't edit it though.

The what was all that about on the second page?? the host file is very important based on what you said there, it could hold the reason as to why you cannot access runescape. Plus IP banning does not stop you accessing the the website (that would be almost impossible) it stops you logging onto your account.

@ N Raj:

IP banning can indeed prevent you from accessing a site.

Here, From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_blocking;

Quote:
IP blocking prevents the connection between a server/website and certain IP addresses or ranges of addresses. IP blocking effectively bans undesired connections from those computers to a website, mail server, or other Internet server.
If IP banning didn't block you off from the site completely, there would be no point having the ability to IP ban.

I do not want this to get into some flame war Lord Sirian, however you cannot be banned from accessing the website please do not bring this into it.

For master x210, have you contacted customer support with this issue, and you seem to know what a host file is, the IP you have posted indicated google.

Re: Runescape issue

N Raj, the post you are talking about was not written by master x210.

It was written by proagony.

For the sake of peace, I won't argue with you about IP banning.

Re: Runescape issue

To answer your question Master x210

The short answer is that the Hosts file is like an address book. When you type an address like www.google.com into your browser, the Hosts file is consulted to see if you have the IP address, or "telephone number," for that site. If you do, then your computer will "call it" and the site will open. If not, your computer will ask your ISP's (internet service provider) computer for the phone number before it can "call" that site. Most of the time, you do not have addresses in your "address book," because you have not put any there. Therefore, most of the time your computer asks for the IP address from your ISP to find sites.

If you put ad server names into your Hosts file with your own computer's IP address, your computer will never be able to contact the ad server. It will try to, but it will be simply calling itself and get a "busy signal" of sorts. Your computer will then give up calling the ad server and no ads will be loaded, nor will any tracking take place. Your choices for blocking sites are not just limited to blocking ad servers. You may block sites that serve advertisements, sites that serve objectionable content, or any other site that you choose to block.
url=http://accs-net.com/hosts/what_is_hosts.html]source[/url]

To access your host file navigate to

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open the file with notepad, or any other text editor, copy the data and paste it here. :)

EDIT: for Lord Sirian, I understand it was not written by Master, but I assumed he would have followed the information written to hopefully solve the issue.

Re: Runescape issue

Given that it is a new computer, I don't really see why there would be anything unusual in the Hosts file, but oh well.

Re: Runescape issue

Ok, I have done some quick research (vista is not my main forte) and know why you cannot save it

Follow these steps, add what I asked and try it one more time

Changing your hosts file in Vista

By default, if you try to modify your hosts file in Vista, it will not let you save it. It tells you that you don't have permission. To successfully modify the hosts file, run notepad.exe as an administrator and open the file.

1) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4) Click File -> Open
5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
7) Select "hosts" and click "Open"
8) Make the needed changes and close Notepad. Save when prompted.

Re: Runescape issue

First of all master, if you did as I had posted then you ought to be able to save the new host file.... Why you cannot save is another issue!

Have you first all tried contacting the runescape customer support from your laptop which can connect to the website. They may be more insightful.

See if you can access this section, it is the download of runescape's windows client.

Code:
http://www.runescape.com/downloads/RuneScape.exe?20090424
I have a few other solutions, but I am rather reluctant to post them (please do not pm me either about these) as they are a rather round about process.

Re: Runescape issue

Ok, this is my second attempt (lost everything I wrote by mis-clicking )

I agree with floop here, how can one website cause so much trouble! But lets get down to the basics, just answer yes or no first (except the first two questions )

1. What anti-virus software do you have?

2. What firewall software do you have?

3. Is this a brand new computer?

4. Have you upgraded to Java Version 6 update 14

5. Have you upgraded to Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.22.87

6. Have you upgraded to Firefox 3.0.11

7. Have you upgraded to IE 8

8. Download atf cleaner from here
  • close all browsers and applications
  • run atf cleaner
  • choose select all
  • and clean!

9. Now try the following

http://www.runescape.com
http://www.runescape.co.uk
http://www.runescape.fr
http://www.runescape.de

There is a tiny (very tiny) chance that your browser is not allocating a protocol such as http and is just using what you type as a search reference, similar to Firefox whereby typing in keywords open Google with your search.

10. Have you contacted the Runescape Customer Support and detailed what is going on? They are likely to have more of an insight as to what is going on!

Now... Some more detailed questions, answer with.. well more detail

1. What is the make and model of your pc?

2. What operating system are you using (state if it is 32 or 64-bit)

3. Are you accessing the internet via a router or a direct cabled connection

4. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?

5. Have you downloaded anything prior to this situation happening (include anti virus software, firewalls etc)?

There was more I was supposed to add, but as I said at the start I lost my entire post

Lets see if we can solve this once and for all!

Re: Runescape issue

Could you please answer the rest of the questions, just state whether you are unable to.

6. Have you upgraded to Firefox 3.0.11 \ (<== I do not understand what you mean by blackslash)

10. Have you contacted the Runescape Customer Support and detailed what is going on? They are likely to have more of an insight as to what is going on!

I have asked this a few times now as you stated you can access runescape through you laptop, but you are yet to reply. Furthermore, are you accessing runescape via a wired connection direct to your laptop or by wireless internet via a router? It is important to know how you are accessing the internet on your laptop to be able to visit the website

3. Are you accessing the internet via a router or a direct cabled connection direct cabled?

I am trying to help the best I can, as this is really rather odd!
