[SOLVED] Need help getting Splinter Cell Chaos Theory started.

OK I've been playing this with no problems, but all of a sudden I get the stupid Microsoft error screen popping up whenever I try to launch it. The one that begins, "splintercell3.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I even redid Windows XP from the ground up and the only stuff I did was add in the updated graphics drivers, and the motherboard drivers for sound and lan then installed the game.

I still got the error though. What the heck is going on?

I bought the game from Direct2Drive, so it's a legal copy.

I've attached the .txt file that has the technical stuff about the error in it.

Oh and I almost forgot. I can't apply a patch as I get an error that says it can't retrieve the version number.

First look at !---IMPORTANT: Please Follow These Steps Before Posting---!
By 'all of the sudden' what do you mean? Did you install any hardware recently? Check for conflicts, press 'Windows Logo' + Pause/Break go to Hardware tab > Device Manager, press all the plus signs and look for an exclamation mark, then double click on it and post what the window says.

What I meant by 'all of a sudden' is just that. I had to restore my system due to a virus attack, so I had to install the game again and it was working. A day or two later I restored it again for some reason I can't remember and installed it and it wouldn't work. I used the exact same Norton Ghost restore point as last time too. And as said in the first post I even did a clean install of Windows XP and it still gave that error, so I'm thinking maybe the virus corrupted one of the files in there or something.

Disregard. Apparently I must have been right in assuming the virus somehow corrupted a file in it. I just deleted the directory and extracted it again from the zip file I downloaded, uninstalled the game, and installed it with the fresh copy and it runs fine.

I only wish I had known this sooner before wasting a DVD on it. All well. I got a few more to spare and can always buy more if I need them.

Was this a cracked copy? or an ISO? While redundant, TSF does not allow help with pirated copies, I say this becaus you said
