call of duty won't start

every time i try to play call of duty 2 and 4, it won't start all the way. i click on the icon (multiplayer) and the screen flashes black like its going to play but then a notice pops up and tells me that the program has "stopped working" and then it asks whether i wan't to check online for a solution or end the program now. when i click on the check for online solutions, it does nothing for a couple seconds and then shuts down the program. it does this for both 2 and 4 in exactly the same way.
please help
