[SOLVED] cpu or gpu??

hmm, well personally im starting to get tired of the technological rat race for gaming computers, but anyway:

my problem is i had an old p4 ddr system running at 2.6 ghz, and it didnt have pcie but had an agp slot, so i went and got the radeon x1650, 512 ddr2 yadda yadda, cost me 100 bucks, WELL

then this month i got a p4 dual core 3.0 ghz system with 2 gig ddr2 (is there a dual core p4??? thats kidof confusing me) but since the system did not have an agp slot, but a pcie, i went out and got the Sapphire Radeon HD 3450 (512 ddr2 with dx10 and Pixel shader 4.1 support), so with dx10 i installed vista

heres where the problem shows its face, i installed my games and to my surprize, they run SLOWER! i could run fallout 3 at max gfx (without antiasailing) at 1028 x whatever and only have a bit of lag when out in the wastes with the 2.6 system, now, it lags pretty bad, its like when i had my crappy 256 agp card >.< im about to tear my hair out!

is it the video card? or is it the processor?? cuz i have never heard of a p4 dual core, especially a 3.0ghz

or is that huge difference alone just from vista? ive used vista before but it was only a tiny dip in performance, not this big!

Re: cpu or gpu??

is your computer a pentium 4 or pentium D? if its a p4, you only have 1 core but if its pen d, u have 2. install xp and you will see your gaming improve like crazy.

Re: cpu or gpu??

The 3450 is a tad slower then the 1650 it is the entry level HD3000 card.
Where are you seeing P4 Dual core if it has HT (Hyper Threading) the OS will show a single core P4 as 2 cores, A Pentium D is actually 2 P4's on the same Die but will show as Pentium D.

D/L CPUz it will ID your CPU> CPUz

Re: cpu or gpu??

my power supply is a300w so i dont think i need top get a new one, as for my cpu windows detects it as a dual core, but that program says ts a single core (xp said dual aswell)
but it has 2 threads, so is windows detecting it wrong? is that what is hindering my capability? heres a screenshot of what the cpuz detects and what windows detects (ignore the 100% cpu usage, im running a few things)

Re: cpu or gpu??

That showing what it should the Prescott's have Hyper Threading Windows see's the the 2 different threads as separate cores programs for the most part do not and treat it as a single core. Nothing wrong there except why is at 100% what is running in the back ground?

A 300w is small today for a PCIe card we usually recommend a minimum of 550w for any PCIe card.

Re: cpu or gpu??

the 100% is just from an extraction i had going. the files were severly shrunk down and the extractor for some reson just took that much up.

but my question is, why is my performance running so terrably??

i mean, i cant even play ut99 correctly, witch is sad, the only game i gan decently play is half life 2, but not aw well as i should :(

would upgrading the powersupply surly speed up my gaming? i had a 300w with my agp and fallout 3 ran great!

should i buy a more compatible cpu?

im verry confused as to why my games run so badly. like i feel like just burning this danm thing, but im really tight on cash as is -_-'

could it be that the cpu is overclocked maybe?

please help! >.<

usually id figure these things out myself, ive been building computers since i was 12 (im 18)

Re: cpu or gpu??

Vista is more resource intense then XP on an older system it shows up more and you will get lower frame rates from Vista then XP.

PCIe Video requires more power then AGP 26 Amps VS 18 Amps on the 12v rail.

Re: cpu or gpu??

I don't think that is the only problem but it is a weak spot you need to address.

Re: cpu or gpu??

mmk, well i found out i got a 450, talk to some technitions, they said as long as the PSU is abouve the recomended requirements, it wont be slower, so my mom bought me the radeon HD 4650 from future shop for about 150 bucks, almost no improvement, so, i went to geno, and barrowed an intel celeron D 2.8, and guess what, everything runs faster now!

So the Cpu was fried? maybe tunneling damage? i dont know, but now i know the true reson. i clued into the cpu when i noticed how bad flash or shockwave applications run, afterall, they barly use your video card, flash is mostly cpu ;)

anyways, celeron sucks cuz they have shitty cache sizes, so during the day im gonna go to geno and hopfully grab a new P4 until i can get a duo.

Thanks for your help!

Re: cpu or gpu??

Celeron D are not good for games at all
you can get a Pentium Dual Core, they are cheap and reliable
I have an E2200 Dual Core 2.2 Ghz and I can run everything on it, I got it for 80$ back then
it's cheaper now I guess, lot cheaper
and lot better than any P4 or Pentium D

Re: cpu or gpu??

a 4650 grahpics card is worth around $70 not $150

SAPPHIRE 100253L Radeon HD 4650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card
$55
after rebate $45
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102805

you got a slower CPU too!

sand we recommend longevity in a computer so no your PSU is probably low quality stuff

you should have something like this

Corsair 550w
$90
after rebate $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139004

Re: cpu or gpu??

after tax it was 148$ it has 1 gig of ddr2 Ram and it runs like gold, its not a sapphire, go to futurshop website and see for urself.

also, the powersupply i have is fine i dont have the money to just go out a buy parts, i am now completely brok, no money, and theres no way for me to buy anything online, i do not have a mastercard or visa, im not rich, and this CPU is not slower, as i said, the 3.0 was running like crap, this 2.8 celeron D runs better then that one, i can play my games semi-decently now.

im not stupid, but im not rich iether, i asked help to determine the problem, not be told to go buy a new computer worth of parts.

i picked up the celeron cuz it was the only socket 775 i could get without paying any money
