Oblivion problems after formating

Hi.
I formated my computer a while ago and have played alot of games since that have been working just fine.
Hitman Bloodmoney is probably the most demanding of them.
So I decided to give Oblivion another go but im at 6 or so fps while staring into a wall and around 2 fps in combat.

My specs:
Ati Radeon 9800 pro
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1 Gig DDR
MSI MS-6702 motherboard

Not a great computer anymore but it used to run oblivion at around 15fps in combat so it was atleast playable.
I've installed DirectX 9.0c, tried the latest graphics card drivers but downgraded to catalyst 6.1 wich I was using when oblivion used to work but to no avail.
The strangest part of my problem is that I get almost the same crappy fps at extremely low settings as on higher settings and my 3dmark score from the 2006 version is 731 wich im obviously not very happy with.

All this while other games like Max Payne 2 and Hitman Bloodmoney work like a charm.

After checking forums I suspected it to be an AGP issue especially since I got the same FPS with CCC set to x8 AGP as with no AGP and that should make a difference but my AGP setting in BIOS is set to auto, the GPU-Z program says I'm running with x8AGP @ x8 and it's set to x8 in my Catalyst control center.

I'm thinking its some function of my graphics card that oblivion and 3dmark utilizes that isn't working properly but I have no clue what it could be or how to fix it.

The computer works fine in every other aspect and I haven't changed any of the hardware except for the monitor.

Any ideas?

Re: Oblivion problems after formating

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

When was the last time you cleaned the dust out of your system? Get a can of compressed air (your local hardware store should have them), and use it to blow all the dust out of every nook and cranny in your computer tower.

You can also download Everest (in my signature) to check your temps and voltages - dust buildup will increase the temps in your system. In Everest, click Computer -> Sensor to view temps and voltages.

Re: Oblivion problems after formating

Hi and thank you.

I cleaned my computer thoroughly when I formated it and was careful not to use anything static. It never exceeds 45˚ celcius and its not clocked or anything. I thought that could be the case too at first but I'm pretty sure its a software issue now..:S

Re: Oblivion problems after formating

Please click on "Common Game Issues" in my signature, and run through all the steps listed. What resolution are you running the game at? For the record, your system is very below-par for Oblivion. The game has very high requirements, and I'm surprised you managed to squeeze 15 frames out of it before the format. However, we'll do our best to get those 15 frames back for you.

Let us know how you go with the steps in that thread.

Re: Oblivion problems after formating

I was playing oblivion with an ATI 9800XT GFX card and was having low FPS on oblivion, and that was with 4GB of RAM and 2 Dual Core Xeon 3.06 GHz processors. If you are getting 15 FPS, WELL DONE! as soon as I upgraded from AGP to PCI-E however, eveything worked so much better. The PCIe card was actually worse clockspeed-wise than the AGP, but I was getting 30 + frames.

Re: Oblivion problems after formating

Yeah I read the stickies before posting and I've scoured lots of forums for a solution.

Here's what I've tried so far:
Reinstalled Oblivion
Installed drivers for my motherboard
Tried 3 different drivers for my graphics card
Checked all BIOS settings and tried different ones
Tried Oblivion with and without patch
Defragmented my hard-drive
Installed AGP drivers (although I know nothing about AGP)

I'm running Oblivion at 800x640 but the fps is pretty much the same at 1024x720 wich I used to run it in back when it worked. And thats what's strange. The latest Oblivion patch even lets you set the game at a "very low" graphics setting wich looks absolutely awful and even then its the same fps as at the "medium" setting. Its mind-boggling to me.

Yeah my machine is pretty inferior but really enjoyed Oblivion despite having to tone down the graphics and Oblivion aside, getting a score of 731 in 3dmark from 2006 just isn't right. I should be above 4000 atleast.

I'm not so bothered by not being able to play Oblivion until I upgrade my stuff as I am by not being able to solve this problem.
Now I even think about it when I'm trying to sleep at night.

Maybe you can relate to that. :)

Appreciate your help, most people I've asked just laugh at me and tell me to buy a new computer.

Edit: By the way.. Could it be a shader issue? Oblivion uses shader 2.0 as far as I know but the ATI drivers should cover that right?

Re: Oblivion problems after formating

It wont be a shader problem it fully supports shader 2.0 :)

John Von Trapp:

Yeah, what can I say.. I love this computer.
Before this format I didn't format for over three years and it was still tip top with maybe one or two defrags a year. And I'm an avid downloader and shift+deleter.
Best money I ever spent so I dont want to give up on her yet.

I know how you feel, I sold my Xeon one for $500....Its worth so much more than that...And I upgraded it soooo much.

Started with:
1x Xeon Dual Core 2.4 GHz
1x 512 MB RAM
1x 80 GB HDD
1x REALLY OLD FireGL 32MB GFX Card

Ended up with:
2x Xeon Dual core 3.06 GHz
4x 1GB RAM
1x 80 GB HDD
1x 250 GB HDD
1x 9800 XT 256MB

I was so sad to see it go....It is worth so much more than $500, the processors go for about $700 EACH....Trust me though, once you move on to bigger and better things

Re: Oblivion problems after formating

I would say upgrade but if you don't need to spend money needlessly which is what you want then lets try some things

download GPU-Z and take a screen of both the sensor tab and the first tab
http://www.filehippo.com/download_gpuz/

try taking out the graphics card out of your comp and spraying the AGP slot to get any dust out. your card may have degraded over time, dunno though... check to make sure all the capacitors on the card are in good condition or any weird stains on it.

I mean if worst comes to worst you can get a card like this and it'll be a big improvement
