Age of empires iii the war chiefs produck key invalid

I recently bought AOE III war chiefs. Please advise if I can load AOE III war chiefs without having the original AOE III loaded on my pc. I’m trying to load and get a ‘Product Key Invalid” error even though I’m only entering the only Product Key I received

Hi GordonSynders, welcome to TSF.
Yes, the War Chiefs expansion does require the original AOE3 to play.
Also, make sure you are entering the correct product key. It should be 5 blocks of 5 numbers (XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX).
