Halo 1 problem

alrite, so i had halo running perfectly the last time i played it, but yesterday i reformated my computer. I downloaded halo this morning, and theres a weird issue going on. When i'm in a game, i can't see what other people type, and i can't type...it's pretty annoying. I re-installed it a few times, and it didn't change a think. I have gamespy arcade, so i don't see what's wrong.

It would be nice if someone could help me with this asap

Give the steps here a go.
I know it is for CE but it should work for the original too.
