[SOLVED] CS:S game crash and error

Hello all, I've got a stumper of a question for ya about Counter Strike Source...

It started when every so often I wouldn't be able to join a server, the game would crash just as it said "Sending client info" and I'd get this error:

Internal driver error in IDirect3DDevice9:: present()

Usually a simple restart of the game fixed it. Then restarting the game did not work anymore, and I had to restart steam, which then fixed it. Then it happened again, and restarting Steam didn't work, so I tried deleting my ClientRegistry.blob, which worked a few times, then stopped working. Finally I searched Steam support and came up with this page: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5204-UOSN-9830

And after trying everything on there, I got to the first "Advanced Option" and tried it, and it worked; for a little while, anyway. My game just crashed again with a different error message:

GetDynamicBaseline: FindStringIndex(146) failed

I've tried reinstalling CS:S, updated all of my drivers, and now I'm at a loss for what to do. This also happened once with TF2 and Episode 1... but I don't play those games as frequently, so I'm not as angry.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi cheezhead18,

Have you updated DX9. Ive noticed that page didn't even mention reinstalling Direct X 9.0c.
Give it a try and see if it helps.
Get the latest DX9 from my sig down the bottom.

Re: CS:S game crash and error

Thanks! That seemed to work. I've joined a few servers since updating.

I did not know you could update Direct X... seems like a simple fix now. How often do they come out with updates? And why doesn't windows update it automatically? Odd.

Thanks again.

Re: CS:S game crash and error

Usually when you buy a new game your DirectX is automatically updated. There is no set date to when Microsoft releases new runtimes for Direct X but its between 4-6 months.
I'll mark as solved.
