Securom and Armed Assault.

Hi Everyone,

First post and its a help request..

If I start with the system specs then the problem, someone may be able to help me. My system is:

Abit 35pro motherboard, running a Q6600 with 4gb of ram.
Two 500 gig hard drives (Samsung 501's) and two DVDs
ATI 1950pro graphics card

And

Windows XP64.

My problem..

Armed assault will not run once patched beyond v1.05.
at 1.08 it gave me a securom error (7001) message and a link which I followed.
I carried out the instructions and deleted all the mounted devices (there were no duplicates). Rebooted the machine as per instructions.

Now armed assault just reboots my machine everytime I try to run it. i have not reinstalled it, just carried on with 1.08.

If anybody has had this problem before and can help me fix it, i would be grateful. Otherwise i have paid for some software which wont run because of it's security.
Another question.. Is it illegal to sell software then produce a patch that stops the programme from working?

Cheers
Dave

Its not Illegeal for games to be sold that don't work beyond a patch based on individual computers but if it was widespread enough a lawsuit would develop.

have a read and use their directions at your own risk
seems to be risy to be deleting registry entries to just play a game

Re: Securom and Armed Assault.

Uninstall (not just disable) any virtual drive software like PowerISO, Daemon Tools, etc and reboot. SecuROM scans the registry for entries related to virtual drive software.

SecuROM detects this type of software and then overreacts by either crashing the game or not allowing the game to start at all. This is why everyone hates SecuROM, because it messes up their computers so badly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If deleting the virtual drive software doesn't fix your problem and you feel confident enough to edit the registry, try this.....

Go to Start > Run, type regedit and click OK to open the registry editor. Go to File > Export to make a backup in case this doesn't work.

Navigate down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ MountedDevices and you should see a few \DosDevices\ entries under the Name column.

Read the Data values for each one and you should find 2 that are identical. Right-click the second one (the duplicate) and select Delete.

For example, I use virtual drives and my DosDevices entries for drives J and K are identical. So if I had your problem on my computer, I would delete the K one and reboot.

If you still can't play the game after this, delete all the REG_BINARY entries in this folder and reboot. Note: This method is approved by SecuROM.

My virtual drive registry entries:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another possibility is that the new game patch conflicts with XP64. Faulty patches are released all the time, so if your problem is not caused by SecuROM's obsession with virtual drives, is it possible to play with patch 1.05, or is 1.08 a required feature?

EDIT: Sorry, I've just noticed Mcninjaguy's link gives the same instructions about the registry entries, but it took me ages to type all this, so I'm leaving it Doh!

EDIT 2: Did you know that 1.08 is not the latest patch for this game? 1.09 fixes the SecuROM error, and they're now up to 1.14 ( link). Don't know if there are any problems with the latest patch.
