What is Open GL? And is it the reason my game won't launch?

Hi there,

I recently purchased a new game from the Steam launcher/software (the game concerned being I-Fluid).
If you are not familiar with Valve games or the name "Steam", Steam is basically a gaming community software that stores your games in a handy library list for launching directly from this location, and you can install games on there in one of two ways: via retail purchased disc(s), or paying online and downloading them into your library.

I-Fluid has downloaded and is fully updated. When I tried to launch the game, an Open GL box popped up to ask if I would like to allow it.
Now, I have never seen Open GL rear its ugly head before two days ago, when I purchased and installed the Advanced version of 3DMark06. During installation of 3DMark06, it asked me if I agree to the terms/conditions to install Open GL. I agreed. This was the first time I have seen Open GL or heard of it. I still have no idea what it is.

Does anybody know what Open GL is? And is it just a coincidence that it popped up when I was trying to launch a newly purchased game that won't launch due to "windows detecting a problem"? (All of my other games in my Steam library work fine).

And was it put on my system when I installed 3DMark06? And is Open GL necessary to keep on my system? (I've noticed that not allowing it to install makes 3DMark06 fail to launch, as it appears a necessary part).

Thanking you in anticipation. :)

Hello,
if you want to know what OpenGL is click here : OpenGL

OpenGL is necessary for certain games to launch, these games do not use DirectX, they use OpenGL instead.
What is your Graphic Card?
if you have Nvidia or ATI, download the lastest Drivers, cause OpenGL is integrated with these drivers.
(if you have the default windows driver for you Vcard, the OpenGL won't be available).
Good Luck

Re: What is Open GL? And is it the reason my game won't launch?

HI there,

I ran CCleaner just now and it detected an invalid key entry for something called "OpenAL"... so it might be AL not GL. Is this pretty much the same thing?

My specs are:

P9500 Core 2 Duo @ 2.53GHz
9800M GT card (Dx 10)
4GB Ram
320GB @7200rpm HD

All of my drivers are always up to date, according to a program I bought called Driver Detective that finds the latest drivers for you and installs them. I try to run this once a week.

OpenAL is different to OpenGL

OpenGL is for Graphics
OpenAL is for Sound

if you your windows is missing OpenAL, you can get it from here :
OpenAL
Good Luck

This is what comes up when I get an installer box for Open AL when I try to launch gthe game from Steam...

Creative Labs, Inc. is providing you with this OpenAL32.dll installer and other OpenAL files ("Software"). You may use and freely integrate with your software applications and distribute such throughout the world at no cost or further obligation to Creative.

Rockmaster... I just tried downloading your file and opened it and it is the same installer that comes up when I try to launch the game for its first time. I've run through the installation for your file too. Still problems so I am going to check out the driver that Mcninjaguy has recommended.

Is this for the laptop card... the 9800"M" GT?

the Nvidia Drivers are generally for all Video Cards, at least the newer ones (Geforce 6200+)

the worst that can happen is that the Nvidia driver will not install and wil give an error if the driver not meant for your computer

That laptop looks really nice (I thought it was desktop how much did it cost you? $1,700?

Re: What is Open GL? And is it the reason my game won't launch?

Hi Mcninja. It cost me around £1,600 (approx. $2,458) and is this one from this company: http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/nexus_overview.php
I chose top specs offered at the time back in October (apart from the X9000 processor which they were offering. I thought the one I chose was the wiser option - I've found the X9000 really noisy and power munching).
Had the lid laser etched with a Kill Bill movie still too (Uma weiding her Hanzo sword up against her face) :D

(I've noticed they are offering a Quadro range FX2700M Nvidia card for the laptop now. Not sure how they fare against the 9800M GT. If you know anything about the Quadro range and whether it has any real advantages over my current 9800M GT card, PM me and let me know. I was lucky to get my GT. They were selling like hotcakes as they were the less power consuming version of the 8800M GT. Now companies only seem to offer the 9800 GTS.)

Very, very useful post. Thanks so much for clearing that up. I honestly don't know how you manage to keep on top of all the different types and classes!
